Is the OSX Firewall capable of doing this or will it require a 3rd party app. ? For now I've switched it to show status in menu bar so you get a chance to catch him snooping.

Use VLC I also have RegionX, but to use it you need to flash the firmware of your DVD drive, and this comes with a risk. If the new firmware doesn't install correctly it can render your drive useless, and void any warranty too. Not heard of this …

You could use an App like Ghost Sphere to hide the App in a folder. Ghost Sphere requires a password to activate itself, and then you can make things visible again as you wish. There are a couple of other similar Apps on the Apple downloads pages.
