openstep has them - I don't know if NextStep did too. Only thing is, although they're good for the more advanced user, I can imagine a lot of Apple's target audience might get lost on the wrong desktop and try to open the same app again and again…

They're a shedload more Apple-friendly than Ars, for a start. I agree, the piece and the follow-up were a trifle dumb in my opinion; however, it is interesting from my point of view as someone who took to the new interface pretty quickly and foun…

I, for one, hate windowshading. I don't think I've ever shaded windows without then having to juggle the bars about over and over. [ 01-28-2002: Message edited by: Guitarbloke ]

You're right, OS X is the killer app in itself; which explains why I use it even though most of my computing involves Pro Tools and Adobe Pagemill. OS 9 seems buggy and messy now; and IT MAKES MP3s SKIP. Eugh. Edit: oh yeah, and Space Trippe…

Like I said, "Pro Tools Free". It's the free hardware independant version - only does 8 tracks of audio and 32 tracks of MIDI (I think), but it's got a bunch of good-quality audio plugins and it's great for demoing songs on a tight budget - you can…

For OS 9.x, nothing beats Pro Tools Free on price/performance If only they'd do an OS X version

SparkME is great for the price , and pretty zippy compared to the shareware sound recording apps. On the other hand, there don't seem to be any free VST plugins around that work with OSX - has anyone seen a half-decent compressor or limiter ab…

You can stop it in the "Classic" section of System Preferences.

I'd imagine that the "look" will largely be determined by the window manager you're using, right?

OSX has a nasty tendency to crash when using 8Mb video cards under OpenGL; iMac users running Q3A will know exactly what I mean.....Giants and the Tribes engine do the same; basically, too many textures and the card folds.

You're not paying Roxio for the 1s and 0s, you're paying for the serial number and the right to use whatever software they choose to let you

I think there's a general problem with buttons, forums and the like. 0.2.5 was the first version in which I managed to post in a forum successfully. I'm pretty sure that when this happens, almost all of the links on the page you're browsing beco…

3D-accelerated games won't run at all on VPC. Hell, I have to turn the sound off to get Privateer to run half-decently

For recording, there's a nice 2-track free program from tcworks called "Spark". I'd suggest some sort of recording preamp with audio outs connected to the line in on the iMac - I swear by my little Tech-21 amp-simulator box; at the moment the other…

I've had to confiscate if from myself; it's very addictive. It's one of the real gamine "experiences", and a must for any fan of Peter Molyneux.

Set up a MIDI channel as a click track; you can chose volume and pitch; I think it's under the "MIDI" menu, but I'm in OSX right now so I can't check
