There have been reports that the earlier model with the GF3 gets better fps; in a low-rez test with eye candy off, I'd imagine the newer model is appreciably faster. Do you seriously think Apple would forget SMP in their tests?

Get an Atari ST! You youngsters don't know you're born! Hopefully the audio situation in OS X is going to be pretty good - I'd imagine a dual G4 would run nicely as soon as they get an SMP-aware solution out of the door - sounds like Logic and P…

I will vouch for Crucial - great prices and excellent service. And, after all that, the RAM even seems to work

My only real objections to XP are that any system digging always seems to bring up pages and pages of very small text, and that the new Start menu takes up most of the screen and is wierdly arranged. I have to say, we're not really in any positio…

Depends if you want to network them. Generally, hospital IT managers are fairly shit at their jobs, in my experience (in England)

The powerbook G4 is pretty much the size and weight of a couple of sheets of A4. The heavy component is the battery; a subnotebook would lose lots of functionality without any real advantage.

Thing is, the mantra that AMD is The One as far as chip development goes is somewhat flawed; it's more the case that their Athlons turned out to be faster on that particular processor revision (processor revisions being what, one every three years n…

MacVoyer: I'd put it the other way - the Mac is for people who've had too much experience of system tweaks and driver issues, and are thoroughly sick of the whole counterintuitive, nerd-friendly shower. [ 04-03-2002: Message edited by: Guit…

The "hardware-software integration" thing is basically about peripherals, and the driver hassles that always used to be prevalent in windows. Generally speaking, if you plug something into a mac, it works.

Yeah but that depends on whether an instruction is lined up blah blah blah - why doesn't everyone take a nice long look at Ars ± pinch of salt?

To anyone with a pre-firewire Mac who won't upgrade because they don't think it'd be enough of an improvement: you'd be surprised To everyone else: who do you think actually cares? Either you've got some rumours or you haven't. If you want to …

That's a terrible idea. Unless someone has come out with a colour screen that takes less power than a B&W

Hmm, they've got presentations from Adobe and Macromedia morning and afternoon on the same day...interesting.

The iBook is still not to be sniffed at - they're pretty zippy and great fun to use, as well as being pretty light for a full-featured laptop. Regarding OS X's slowness - I agree, the interface is slow. However, the actual workings are pretty ni…
