Are the 970s soldered or detachable?

The only G5 multipliers I know of are 2x (PowerMacs) and 3x (iMacs), so I'd guess that upgrades would run at 3x the bus frequency, or 2.4GHz for first generation 1.6GHz PowerMac G5 (IIRC their bus frequency was 800MHz). However, I'd be fairly certai…

Quote: Funny thing is PCI-Express doesn't really do a thing for games. The only technology today that could really make use of PCI-Express today is CoreImage, so I expect it to come when Apple next redesigns their motherboards. How is running pi…

Quote: so a mac with a cell proc and tiger is a impressive gain in speed Unless you are performing a task that doesn't use the SPEs (how often do you do things analogus to decoding 48 MPEG streams similtaneously?).

While running Xbox 2 games on other hardware is theoretically possible, it's probably not feasible. There's a lot more to XBox 2/PowerMacs than the CPU, not to mention that legal ramifications. Current PCs are probably too slow to emulate the ancill…

Although modern GPUs are also general purpose, they're faster than normal CPUs for graphics operations, both because of the functional units they contain (more of them and more graphics specific) and their proximity to video RAM. There's not much…

Now now, Apple can't recommend a 3GHz processor for Tiger, because there aren't any Macs using 3GHz processors...

Quote: As it is now hardly anything beats the dual 2.5Ghz G5. At the top of the heap Apple still do pretty well, but pretty much everything beats a single 1.8GHz G5. (Except Celerons ).

With respect to making the bus wider, this approach is the opposite of the general trend. Making a bus wider increases the cost of the board (more traces in the same area, possibly more layers, more complex connectors). Putting trace space at a prem…

Compared to the tabletops 7 hours is indeed amazing, but there are some Centrino/Mobile CPU laptops that get similar times.

Does anyone know an easy way to limit Blizzard Downloader's throughput?

A GeForce 6600 or Radeon X600 would be a good card for the iMac (usually PCI-Express too ).

The second option. There is a hint of duplicity about the question...

I doubt that Apple would go for a drop in dual core CPU, because it wouldn't perform anywhere near expectations. When you mention "dual", people are looking for a 50%+ speed boost, which I doubt a 200MHz MPX FSB could provide.

Quote: Expose without animations would be useless. Maybe not useless, but the animations serve the purpose of linking the full size windows to the thumbnails.
