For what it's worth, I recently experienced this problem with several drives, none of which use the exFAT format. I experienced the problems on an M2 Mac, but was able to mount the drives on an older Intel Mac running an older version of Sonoma.

I wonder why none of the big financial players are on the list... (PayPal is on the list, but it did not offer me the option of using passkeys.)

Users should be aware that data stored in Application Support or in disk image files may not be backed up by some online backup services, in particular, Backblaze.
