It's been said that as a last resort, read the f_______ manual or in my case, read the f________ instructions. "Red faced, he rebooted to the external HDD, opened Disk Utility, and pressed Erase (for the internal HDD)." Lo and behold, it began …

Okay. I've backed up the HDD and made a bootable copy. I'm ready to do a Disk Utility erase; however, Erase is grayed out. It tells me "This is the startup partition. You can't erase it." What do I do now?

"Then reinstall the applications that you need - don't just reimport all the baggage and preferences from your old system, one or more of which are probably causing these problems." I appreciate the advice. The problem is that I don't know what th…

Tried deleting Safari first and then downloaded Mavericks again. That didn't work either. When Safari is opened, Activity Monitor and Memory Cleaner show memory rapidly drain away until it's just a few K. Scary. Activity Monitor shows Safari a…

Mavericks and the Safari version that came with it.

I’m fairly certain that the problem stems from Safari. It gobbles up huge amounts of memory but doesn’t access URL’s. I’m using Firefox which is okay but would prefer to use a ‘workable’ Safari. I’ve tried to find a Mavericks Safari to download…

Thanks. I was able to remove the members name from the list.

You’re probably sick of hearing about D&D problems as I am of having them. The fix is in - but not permanently. Every so often I have to run the Terminal program, relaunch Finder, and then D&D works - for a while. The last time I just relau…

Linc Davis’ fix worked for a while, then quit; however, D&D can be reestablished by repeating the procedure. No restart necessary. Not perfect but better than no D&D at all.

Sorry about beating this dead horse. I found another D&D fix that doesn't require a restart. While it's not specifically for Mavericks, It's working now (but for how long? ) Linc Davis Re: cannot drag and drop in osx 10.7.5 Sep 23, 2013 8:03…

Crap! Back to square one. Drag and drop worked for about 17 hours but quit about 15 minutes ago. Even If I could recall the change I made via terminal, I wouldn’t do it again as it required a restart. I'll keep looking for a fix that's more perman…

I’ve checked out Apple Support Communities, Mac-forums, etc. The drag and drop problem goes back at least to 2005. Over the years, there have been many, many users’ complaints that they lost D&D after upgrading to new OS versions, not just M…

Before doing the clean install of Mavericks, I would like to download it onto a USB flash drive. I read that the Mavericks file size is 5.3GB; my (blank) USB drive is 8GB (DiskUtility says it’s just under 8GB). However, when I try to copy it o…

Thanks, KoSH, I had used Time Machine in the past, but when I had a meltdown awhile back, Time Machine backups were nowhere to be found. They reappeared when I "upgraded" to Mavericks. I'm going to trust it again but with fingers crossed. Op…

Thanks for all of your suggestions for ‘fixing’ Mavericks, but Muppetry is right. I need to do a clean install —- before I lose what little sanity I have left. I’ve wasted far too much time trying to fix too many problems. Better to start over from …
