  • Apple briefed some analysts last week on the announcements. One or more of them has leaked to C-Net and DePlume.
  • 1.2Ghz would be sensible, if coupled with a mobo upgrade and DDR-RAM. Would significantly increase Power Mac speed while not constraining chip supplies.
  • [quote]Originally posted by xype: but aren't we missing something here? IBM managed to build a highly specialised/fast PowerPC chip that costs considerably less than a G4 chip. Doesn't that mean that IBM, in it's own right, is quite good ad doing C…
  • [quote]Originally posted by JCG: That contract is only for the G4, when Moto can't meet their production requirement for the G4, then Apple can use IBM to fabricate G4's for Apples use. It does not keep Apple from using G3's, or future processo…
  • [quote]Originally posted by xype: Oh? That's a new one - I didn't know they were forced to use Moto. You didn't know it because they aren't. I don't know where he's getting this from, but it's high-grade BS. Come on SpiffyGuyC, where's …
  • [quote]Originally posted by failedmathematician: I simply cannot imagine any 3d professional with demanding deadlines would choose to use a Mac. And frankly, I don't think that Apple cares. As you say, you're no professional. I do know pro…
  • [quote]Originally posted by Junkyard Dawg: Motorola has no incentive to make fast desktop PPCs, they care more about the embedded market. It would be very cool if Apple could acquire the rights to Moto's PPC development (and the engineers) and des…
  • [quote]Originally posted by AirSluf: Wrong. Power4 is a PPC chip that is light-years ahead in performance. It just isn't targeted to desktop PC use at a consumer price point. [ 03-08-2002: Message edited by: AirSluf ] <sigh&g…
  • [quote]Originally posted by SpiffyGuyC: Well there isn't much reason for IBM TO make the fastest PowerPC chips right now, is there? If they went to all the trouble of designing/manufacturing them, they still couldn't sell them to Apple until t…
  • [quote]Originally posted by G-News: Even if the G4 could close teh GHz gap on its own, it would then face the new Generation gap, and the 32bit gap vs 64bit. Given that Itanium, Intel's 64-bit chip, is due to debut at 800MHz, I think it woul…
  • [quote]Originally posted by Shadow Knight: On the G5 note, it's positively strange how some people here argue so violently that the G5 *CANNOT* come out before January 2003. What's your stake in it? Why do you *want* there to not be a G5 until 1/…
  • [quote]Originally posted by JW Pepper: Yep we're all agreed then. We're stuck with a Dp 1ghz machine. Isn't it awful. Yes, isn't it awful that if you're doing hardcore video editing your 1GHz DP Mac eats anything on the Windows side…
  • [quote]Originally posted by Eugene: stimuli, what do you think RC5 is? RC5 is pure integer. If only people would take the effort to write AltiVec code into their apps... There's writing AltiVec code, and there's writing good AltiVec code. You …
  • [quote]Originally posted by mslee: The display layer of quartz is vector-based, so there is some benefit from having AltiVec there. If I understand you correctly, you're right, but for the wrong reasons :-) The "vector" in vector processing…
  • [quote]Originally posted by philbot: I don't know about the Hammer, but from what I've seen a single 800Mhz G5 is quicker than a Dual Athlon (I think it was a dual 1.9 Ghz but I can't be sure). [ 02-02-2002: Message edited by: philbot ] &…
  • When will everyone realise that there's a lot of mileage left in the G4, and that G5 isn't a chip that Apple will use in the short term? G5's won't be around till the Autumn at the earliest, and the first announcements in the G5 line will be devo…
  • Looks like MU was bang on the money....
  • [quote]Originally posted by postheide: 1 GHz for those with too much money in their pockets and merely 800 MHz for the rest of us. And even better: no L3 cache in the low-end configuration and NO APOLLO, i.e. no increased performance per clock. …
  • [quote]Originally posted by Telomar: That is roughly what I'd heard. 3GHz has been pushed back a little but it fits. The AMD stuff comes from two sources. The first was a presentation (by AMD) from a while back that I can't find any inte…
