Something's not right. The spacing in your pic is equal to three columns on my Mac. If I space my icons like in your pic and choose Arrange by Kind they snap back close together. Have you tried Arrange by Kind again?

Is the external HD formatted as Fat 32? If so that's your problem. Fat 32 does not support file sizes over 4 Gigs. If it was formatted in Mac HFS+ there would be no file size limit.
