I finally decided to replace the hard drive since everything else seemed to work fine. It started right up and seems to be fine now.

I tried repairing disk in disk utility and I get the beachball. I attempted the erase disk and i get and "unable to unmount the disk" error.

I spoke too soon. When Installer gets to the last step, Preparing disk I think, I get the beachball and not much else. Could this be a hard drive issue ?

Good news. After waiting a bit longer an install OS X dialogue box appeared. A fresh install is occuring as I speak. Thanks for the help. Macs really do heal themselves

Ok, I just powered it up the mac mini for the first time in about a week and after about 5 minutes I now have got past the grey screen and its a light blue screen with no icons on it. I can move my cursor around using the mouse though. Guess I'l let…

Actually I do get the chime and the grey apple screen with the wheel when I press the c key but thats it. I havent tried just letting it run for a while, but I will tonight.

Yes I have, but holding down the c key on startup does nothing at all.
