Not sure how something "restricted" to universities and businesses could be considered not useful. The last several companies I have worked for use LDAP extensively, simplifying everything from e-mail access to intranet browsing.

I recently switched back to the Mac platform, which I had abandoned during the Performa/Quadra years. The company I worked for at the time switched to Wintel when Windows 95 came out, and I got caught up in the hype that this was forward progress...…

It's not especially intuitive, but you are rewarded with numerous options for "stroking" the path with various brushes and other tools. Here's how: 1. Select the Shape Tool (e.g, Rectangle, Rounded Rectangle,Ellipse, etc.) you want from the Toolb…

I have this software. It works wonderfully. The Evocam software is especially good. The best webcam software I've used on any platform.

Something is wrong here. PowerBooks are notorious for bad wireless reception, but if you really have a max range of 10-feet, perhaps your antenna connection has come loose? What model PowerBook do you have? I have a 800Mhz PowerBook DV, and can g…

Good advice, Pie Man. I've sent them a bug report. I got daring (well, for an artsy-farty, English major, non-programmer type like myself, anyway) and poked around in the plist files and package contents, but couldn't see anyplace where this vari…

Anyone know if the nifty little frame rate "speedometer" app Phil Schiller used to illustrate Quartz Extreme in his MacWorld presentation is available for download anywhere?

Fixed it as (almost) good as new with a $2 tube of Krazy Glue. For a net savings of $608, I can live with a dent or two.

Is it bogging down at any particular point during the boot process? I have an 800Mhz PowerBook G4 (DVI) and it takes about twice as long to boot when I'm not on a network. It hangs up for 30 seconds while the "Initializing Network" message is displa…

You need another one of exactly the same cable that currently goes from your Roadrunner to your PC. Ask for an "Ethernet cable." (Or look for RJ-45 on the package.) You mentioned BestBuy.

Take my responses as guidance rather than gospel, since I'm having my own Airport problems (described in another thread). The new Airport base stations have an Ethernet-out port on the back, which should allow you to connect your PC. Just plug th…

Thanks, Alcimedes! (At first I thought Alice's incoherent response was due to a faulty dial-up connection, since I can't use my cable modem...) Spoke with AT&T last night, and they said my modem was "online" and that there were no outages in …

You've probably discovered this by now, but check out the "Create Network" option under the Airport icon in the menu bar. Once you define a network name and password, you can easily swap files between computers. Also note that, with 10.2 (Jaguar)…

To the best of my knowledge, Apple doesn't have a "factory outlet" at HQ or anything like that. And I doubt you'll get any special deals in the Bay Area; everything seems to cost more here. Plus you get whacked with our 8.25% sales tax. I'd buy onli…
