The biggest complaint I've heard from the institutional buyers I've been associated with (and for a small time, was), is that the release schedule and secrecy really screws up their buying process. The budget doesn't plan for two trade shows, etc. …

Actually, HT (or RapidIO) would be huge news. BadAndy over at Arstechnica has been working out a bunch of stuff on the performance limitations of the G4, and it comes down to memory bandwidth and some crappy OS X stuff with the cache. Motorola has…

BS. Shops that need to copy huge files around will never use wireless. It willnever deliver the kind of bandwidth they want. What they want is Gigabit to the desktop, which means cheaper switches. That's it. If Apple moves to something, it wi…

[quote] I showed them the iPod - they didn't even know it existed. To be honest, I find that incredibly hard to believe. But even if true, we'll see. Apple will capture to DV format if they do this. Why? Because that's what iMovie uses, and …

A lot, if properly implemented. A embedded programmer over on Ars Technica has been showing us how bandwidth limited the G4s really are, and that were not actually compute bound yet. He's also come up with some nasty problems in mach and general p…

Ok, so they're UPS's. Sorry. I have seen a number of rackmount cases that look like that anyway. Still, my question is, if it's bad, why does SGI do it?
-
[quote] People in the market for servers DO NOT CARE how pretty it is! I'll agree, you're mostly right. But some of them do. Again, look at SGI. Apple will release a decent looking one, because it's Apple. I'd say it'd damage their corporate c…

I posted this on Ars Technica: [quote] Is this the first time Apple has released something before the rumors expected it? I've seen April 30th as the release date several places, and lots of WWDC expectations, but Steve got it out before then. Hm…

You wouldn't by any chance be a bit biased there my friend would you?

[quote]so why would Apple add another set of decode functionality He also mentioned encode, which is rather different, and from my point of view, more useful. I wouldn't be surprised if the deal really was only done to grab some good EEs. If Ra…

I knew it was April Fools, but I can't wait for Apple to pull it too. Actually, I think I'd put a reference to a "G5" in the source of the Apple.com mainpage, and then put "April Fools" under it somewhere, and see how many people didn't catch it.

Bad andy over at Ars Technica has been posting some really amazing AltiVec stuff, and his constant factor is that it's incredibly membory bound and increasing MHz will likely do very little for many operations right now. If a 2GHz G4 with SDRAM i…

Apple just needs to get some PAL8045 heatsinks. Would help keep them fanless. Those monsters are awesome.

If Apple releases anything at NAB, it will be QT6, Quicktime Broadcaster, and DVD Studio Pro, the media apps they have ready to go. The only limit on the QT stuff is liscensing. If they can get that worked out, they're good to go.

I'd just like to point out that lots of Cell phone companies are completely convinced people would LOVE to have this on their cell phones. So it's not like the vague idea doesn't have industry support. Also, with Apple's new MPEG4 push, they r…

RE: PVR style stuff. I don't know anything on that kind of thing, but Quicktime Broadcaster is coming out at the same time as QT6. I've seen it demo'd. Now, it requires you to have an analog capture board, but ATi can just make an All-in-Wo…

I wouldn't make too much out of high processor util. Maybe he crunches RC5... Are the pictures still up? The link in the first post was empty for me.

Maybe it's a message? They're telling the people who are holding out "Ok, we don't have it yet, but it's coming soon and here's something to tide over the people who NEED to buy now" Anybody thought of that? It's not like they were getting a to…

I was amused by the reference to "ars-technica like aliases". I presume he means like Ken "Caesar" Fisher and John "Hannibal" Stokes... Ok, so no DDR with current systems. However, I cannot conceive of Apple not implementing DDR, RDRAM or some …

Fran441 - Because I'd have to wait 10 freakin' years to get it? I would like a FW TV tuner. I have a TiBook but no TV, so this would be a significant improvement. Video Capture abilities would be nice as well. But that would probably make it t…
