SDW, this happens all the time with technology products. At this point, you have a decision to make: either enjoy the great computer you have, or endure some minor financial loss and inconvenience to get the latest and greatest (which will probably …

I think the 3% figure could be fairly accurate. Since we all know that the plural of "anecdote" is "data," here are some numbers from the Website of a company I'm doing consulting for. The site gets over 300,000 page views in a slow week and the …

You might check out these guys. They sell a sat/sub unit, but the price is right and they'll even pay return shipping if you don't like it. When it comes to computer speakers, 1-inch "full range" drivers with 4-inch "subwoofers" won't come close …

Look for a "wireless bridge", which is a separate small powered box w/antenna that connects to your Mac's Ethernet port. Most companies that make wireless routers make wireless bridges, too, such as Linksys, Netgear, and D-Link. Simplified versions …

Um, have you tried clicking the lower right-hand corner of your browser window and dragging it to the edge of your screen? If so, what was the result?

Let's see: Woz has been a big proponent of iCab. On my list of preferred Mac browsers, it's about...5th? 6th? Its biggest fans seem to be hairshirts who wail "Well, it *would* render that site if the HTML was perfect." I guess Woz prefers a browser …

Dell's former CIO jumped to Hewlett-Packard this year. He brought 5 buddies from Dell with him (now all VPs at HP). Given that HP is in disarray, one wonders why it would be appealing to move from Dell to HP? Perhaps things at Dell are *worse* th…

Quote: You have no idea how wrong you are, my friend. The amount of jobs GM and Ford contribute to this country is spread upon its suppliers and those that supply them. Toyota and Honda do not have as much domestic content in their brands and they …

Quote: Originally posted by Towel It makes me wonder - do the architects/engineers who put together datacenters ever use the hardware room as a cogeneration plant to heat the rest of the building in winter? Suck cool air in from outside (the HVAC…

Many prototypes don't get developed far enough to be salable. A new board design might be put into an older case, or just built on a "breadboard" with no case at all. Case prototypes are often made by using temporary molds that aren't the highest qu…

The receiver on the new iMac is behind the Apple logo (or so I read, haven't verified in person).

"...on top of a cliff...dressed up as a nun..." Guess that makes you "Nun of the Above." Thank you. I'll be here all week.

Search Google for "wireless bridge." No drivers, just requires a free Ethernet port.

A good site for getting info on songs used in ads (Apple and others), TV shows, etc. is AdTunes. In many cases, they link to a source for purchasing the song (iTunes, Amazon, etc.).

First, try Keot's suggestions. In most cases, one or more of those suggestions will fix your problem. If you still can't delete the file, open Terminal and type (without quotes) "rm -rf ". (There's a space after -rf.) Then open the trash and drag…

Mine runs 50-55 C at idle in a warm (80 F) room, lower in a cool room. Is your processor set to "Automatic" or "Highest"? The "Highest" setting will raise the idle temperature noticeably.

Can you describe what happens when you (or your friend) tries to print a 4x6 photo on 4x6 paper? Does it not print at all, or does it print off-center, or what? (I wrote the following before Ebby posted, so maybe this adds something, maybe not...…

Would you like to be able to boot off of your backup drive? In case your internal drive fails, a bootable backup would enable you to keep using your Mac. If yes to the above, you'll need a Firewire drive because a Mac won't boot from a USB drive.
