You can encode it into a RAR file and segment it. Never done this myself, not sure about the details; a program like WinRAR may do it.

Maybe try the bootcache fix for panther? See http://www.macintouch.com/panreader20.html Try repairing permissions and repairing the disk in Disk Utility also.

Also should note that not all DVD drives can read +, but almost every one can read -, and fairly recent computers too (my combo drive in my DP1250 doesn't read + media).

Could get a m-audio revolution for analog 5.1, $100 or so. Probably getting a decoder may be better since you won't have to worry about drivers (G5 optical is handled by Apple). Might be cheaper decoders out there rather than the Creative one.

You can find 512 chips for less than $100 if you look around though, Apple tends to mark up, a lot. I think Apple did a test drive program at one point, and it turned out to be a bad idea.
