  • Are you sure you don't live in Cambridge? That idea of yours is a bit too "left" for Lexington. --Paci [ 12-04-2001: Message edited by: mjpaci ]
  • The portables are on AirPort and the desktops are attached to the network via ethernet cables. How can I be so certain? I am at the Northshore Mall Apple Store right now typing this in. I know it's sad that I read AppleInsider from the AppleStore. I…
  • Angular velocity, my friend. When the disc is being read near the center, the drive spins faster and while it is on the outside, it spins slower. In theory, you should get constant throughput from your CDROM. --Mike
  • try: ps -ax | grep -i **PROCESS NAME HERE** kill pid from above command --Mike
  • SMTP is for sending mail. You will be able to get your mail from Yahoo! but not send through your client. If you want to send mail, you need to find a client that supports SMTP authorization. --Mike
  • zap the PRAM first. What refresh rate @ 1024x768 were you using? Start at 60Hz and move up from there until you find what frequency it balks at. That monitor should handle 1024x768 at 85Hz. Try it at 75Hz first. --Mike

  • Do you have a 3rd party USB mouse attached? Some mice when they become visible on startup have their mouse button in the "down" position. Any Mac troubleshooter worth his salt knows that mouse button down at startup means eject all media (cd, zip, d…
  • could you ssh into the box and launch the app that way?
  • That high-pitched sound is the drive. I was able to get one replaced under warranty. I would get headaches listening to it. --Mike
  • Linkin Park sounds like Depeche Mode mixed with something else I cannot think of right now... hmmmf. Anyway, as for Punk, there is plenty besides the Ramones and the Clash. Rancid is a good re-Punk band. Ska is a hard one. There's so much and…
  • kali: What do you do about apps that install a boatload of extensions? You still need to reinstall them when you reinstall the OS. True? The only App I feel comfortable about moving all over the place is Quark Xpress. Strange, eh? --Mike
  • Which OS? 9 or X? Do you have all of the patches to Diablo? Are you running the Expansion Set? There is a known issue with the latest ATI drivers and Diablo II. Blizzard is working on it. --Mike
  • On my B&W G3 at home and my Quicksilver at work I have two ata drives on the primary bus and neither of the drives are set to Cable Select. I've heard that CS is recommended, but not required, on the newest G4s. As long as one drive is master an…
  • Isn't a lot of the Mac bootup time taken checking the RAM? The more RAM you have, the longer it takes to check, therefore, the longer it takes to boot. You could disable the RAM check in OS 9, can you in OS X?
  • [quote]Originally posted by Harald: I just took my pod to a place called Kiruna, 200km north of the arctic circle in Sweden ... the specs say it dies below -20 and you're not supposed to use it below -4. Is that Centigrade?
  • Remember that ADC (Apple Display Connector) is just Apple's name for whatever it is. Kind of like FireWire is/was Apple's name for IEEE1394 and iLink is Sony's name for the same thing. --Mike PS: ADB (Apple Desktop Bus) was almost adopted by I…
  • TiVO doesn't make its money from the sale of the hardware. TiVO makes its money from the service it provides. A few points: In order for TiVO to thrive, it needs to stay under the radar of the RIAA and MPAA and other content providers like ABC…
