  • The 7457 is now shipping. http://www.businesswire.com/cgi-bin/...m&footer_file= In what quantities, I've no idea. Seperately...another difference between the g3 and g4 lines are their busses. the g4 uses the MPX bus. The g3 uses th…
  • You anti-Motorola guys are saying that Motorola won't deliver what it promises. I think you have a valid point. But what I'm thinking, and others are saying, is that IF Motorola shuts up and puts up, I'll welcome the competition to IBM.
  • Am I correct that there is no authoritative evidence that IBM wil EVER make a 980? We know that Power 4 -> 970, but has anyone confirmed the Power 5 -> 980.
  • The powerbooks which will not be appearing tommorow will sport a 1-1.3 ghz 7457s, 200 mhz mpx bus and cost $100 less than current models. And I have no basis for this speculation.
  • According to the http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/39/31424.html Motorola has sped up production of the 7457 and it will be shipping this quarter. A 1.3 ghz g4 is pin compatible with the 7455, draws about 16 watts, and is about half the pri…
  • The 7457, if it ever actually ships, will be .13 The 7455, is .18 To repeat myself, I think the .09 970 is the future for the powerbooks...but before we get there, I think we'll see the 7457 as a speed bump.
  • From reading the old pdf http://e-www.motorola.com/brdata/PDF...CSALESFACT.pdf It appears that Apple could drop the 7457 into the powerbooks, the iMacs and the remaining G4 Powermac without ANY additional engineering costs. The 7457 is half th…
  • These machines are so fast and superior to current offerings, they'll fly off the shelves at these prices. When this initial demand is satisfied, prices will drop and the total volume of sales will skyrocket.
  • When you say the 970 is 30% cheaper than the g4, are you referring to the 7455 or the much smaller and modestly priced 7457?. The 1.0 ghz 7457 draws 7.5 watts. How many watts does the 1.2 ghz 970 pull? Are there any engineering costs associated w…
  • I don't know when the 970s will be announced, by I'd put up a heap of money that says they'll ship immediately after they're announced.

  • The next upgrade will be the arrival of the pin compatible 7457. It'll get dropped into the PB with virtually no engineering changes yet give a significant boost to battery life AND speed.
  • I find it interesting that Apple has allegedly received 20,000 1.4 GHZ chips but 40,000 1.6 GHZ and 40,000 1.8 GHZ chips. Maybe the 970 is fabbing so well their aren't alot of slow chips. Maybe Apple doesn't need so many because they're puttin…
  • 1. There will be no 970s in the powerbooks until IBM reaches 90 nm. 2. Until that time, the powerbook will have a speed bump and battery boost with the impending arrival of the 7457. 3. The current powermacs, emacs and iMacs will get 7457s …
  • I wouldn't be surprised if Panther was demoed on a "black box" with unsubtle hints about 64 bit compatibility... but no DIRECT mention of the 970. Why? Hardware isn't the point of the WWDC but a little tease of 64 bit hardware will turn the att…

  • If you announce that the 2004 Corvette will have 5 more horsepower than the 2003, you won't lose too many sales of current 'Vettes. On the other hand, if you announce that the 2004 will have 400 more horsepower, a new chassis and better gas milea…
  • The iPod will never *FEATURE* video. The largest form factor for pocket portables that we'll be seeing will have about a 3x5 screen. Anything bigger won't fit in one hand or in a guy's pocket. And 3x5 just won't cut it as a video monitor. Not n…
  • If Apple buys Universal... You'll have different levels of access priced according to quantity AND quality. Free: Everyone will have access to the entire Universal Music collection over the internet... the catch is that the sound will be mono a…
  • The G4 target is reasonable performance, cheap, at 6-15 watts. The 970 is targeted at great performance at 20-40 watts (no word on just how cheap). Now the 970, at its lowest power config, will certainly be *capable* of notebook duty. But it …
  • There is a problem with Xbits roadmap: no dates. So the fact Intel intends to get reach 4, 8 or 12 ghz doesn't worry me if I'm IBM. What worries me is WHEN they expect to get to 4, 8 or 12 ghz... In any event, competition between IBM and Intel …

  • I predict the 7457 will turn out to be a "drop in", cheaper and faster replacement for the 7455. As soon as its available, we'll see it in the Powermac line...6 month product cycles be damned.
