  • You might want to keep the mac around too. It was amazing just how many times the few mac users could save the day for their PC friends (I did it a lot). An honest suggestion: Wait until you are actually at school for awhile before buying a mach…
  • Thanks, rub it in a little more! I recently moved to a city that is still in the dark ages. They offer DSL (I don't qualify despite the fact that Ameritech has sold it to me twice and called me once telling me I did) but the cable company doesn'…
  • Or, maybe like any other guy who was interested in a girl might do, he asked one of her friends or someone who knew her for a little info. Just a thought!
  • So, could the iPod be the beginning??? I still think this is a good idea. There are way more Targets than there will be Apple Stores!
  • Well, this thread got old but there is more to add. The Switch ads must be working or something. I ran into an older couple at OfficeMax today. I heard them say something about not seeing anything for the mac but didn't worry about it. Then, w…
  • That was kind of my thinking. The funniest thing is my girlfriend's dad is a manager at Walmart. Target tends to sell a little more expensive but often slightly better or more in style product, is the way I've seen it. I tend to lean toward T…
  • Ah, but Best Buy and Sears sell other computers too, or have. At Target there are a lot of times where there isn't even a salesman to tell people not to buy the machines. I haven't seen any computers for sale at Target around us yet, just stuff …
  • Thanks for the ideas so far, anything will help. Here is a little background. I have some design background but wouldn't make it in a full on graphics position at this point. I'm mainly interested in tech support, consulting, admin, web design …
  • Every software upgrade requires a level of hardware. Do you really think OS 9 would run well on a Macintosh Plus? Or how about Windows XP on a 486. Oh, and we have to boot them both from floppy disks and use less than 1 MB of ram. Every softwa…
  • The computer directly connected to the Airport (if by ethernet) should be set to use AppleTalk over ethernet. Also, you may have to use the Airport software to turn AppleTalk to Ethernet bridge or some setting like that on.
  • My understanding is that both DirectTV and Dish Network offer some form of two way over satallite. I have not researched this but our neighbors at a cabin have because we can't get a phone line up there so no internet! (really hard I might add). …
  • First, call back your phone company about 2 or 3 different times. Talk to different people if possible. Call from a different number than your own. When we got DSL at our office (Verizon) someone else called and it registered as a # that would wo…
  • Which version of the Powerbook do you have? My Pismo handles DVD playback just fine in OS X.
  • Check the amount of VRAM. If you want to stay really cheap upgrade it to the max amount (I think it is 6 megs). It will help some. We have X running on a 266 and it seems to work pretty well. I'm sure if you wait for the speed improvements in Ja…
  • Depends what other software you are running, what versions, etc. If you are using Office you'll want the new copy of that too. Any Adobe products on there? Anything else? I'd try to bump the ram up a bit while you are at it. I'm running 320…
  • OT 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 was the most recent version I could find. It is updated to that, a great upgrade which will make it easy to get internet. However, we still can't get it past that warning. It can see the server, asks for login, etc. just can't…
  • Thanks for the info. It is actually a shorter trip, just to DC but didn't know if I needed to worry about security, etc. I have noticed my battery getting shorter too. I'm down to 2 hours if I'm lucky on a Pismo. Hoping that after my interview…
  • A cross over cable could do the trick too. Also, I haven't tried it in X yet but in 9 you can just turn on file sharing and set the sharing for the CD you insert. Then you can access it on your other computer. Very easy to do.
  • What do you have in the Search In field? We've done this search on drives that weren't indexed before. Also, your entering the text in the content includes field right?
