I think dropping the optical drive for dual storage capabilities (a la iMac) would be a sensible choice for the MBPro. As long as I can use any 3rd party DVD drive to install software. Just don't make me buy an Apple Superdrive for $99

Unfortunately the iMac doesn't have PCIe slots, extra HDD bays or dual display support. I can't think of any compelling reason why the single-CPU MacPro has to be a Xeon. Or why it can't sell for $1999

The way it was explained to me is that very few applications take advantage of the multi-core/multi-thread capabilities of the current CPU's. As such it may make more sense to buy a single-CPU with higher clockspeed.
