Always check the compatibility database at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com before you buy a CD-RW drive! A drive ought to burn from Toast, iTunes and the Finder (on 9 and X) and very importantly be bootable.

Get GraphicConverter, run it, quit it, and install the ScanGear plug-in into ~/Library/App Support/GraphicConverter/Plug-Ins/. Relaunch GC and ScanGear should be in File>Acquire. Let me know if this works.

I have that same scanner. First of all don't use the drivers on the CD. Go to Canon's website and DL the newer versions there. If you don't need to scan in classic, you don't need the Classic drivers. Install Toolbox first, then install the LiDE 30/…
