  • Fatal fire at Apple supplier's factory in Shanghai kills eight

How long until someone in the tech media or people commenting start claiming Apple has some responsibility with this?

Well Apple is the one doing business in China and other countries where their only concern is low cost.   In this regard my opinion of Apple has changed dramatically in the last couple of years, I really don't believe they give a damn about the people building their hardware.   Basically they are a forked tongued devil when it comes to worker treatment.

“Fatal Apple supplier factory fire in Shanghai kills eight”...
that’s really garbled English, how is the apple fatal, is it poisonous? Is so heavy if it falls on your head it will kill you?

    Reading the story;
”Fatal fire at an Apple supplier’s factory in Shanghai kills eight”
would be a more accurate headline.

Headlines from the same imbeciles that use the phrase "fully semi-automatic" to twists minds into believing something that isn't the case at all.   Even then we don't even know if this factory supplies Apple with anything.    So at best there has been a fire in China leading to fatalities and is almost certainly not the only fire last night world wide.

Fires are a terrible way to die, so lets not forget that.   I have two friends that work for their local volunteer fire departments and they have horror stories you don't want to hear.    Hopefully the details will be coming shortly.

  • US House approves report accusing Big Tech of monopolistic behavior

Healthcare, student loans, lethal gun/police violence, disinformation and the resulting civil unrest...  so lawmakers give us... a review of Netflix?

None fo these things you have listed are real problems.    Healthcare, Student loans for example are mostly of interest to people to lazy to work for a living.   The imagined gun problem is more about the lack of effective police violence against the people that can't become viable members of society.   In other words we really need a death penalty in the USA that addresses people that don't want to work within the system.   Civil unrest is due mostly to people that don't want to work within the system.

So Yeah your attempt to draw attention away form a real issue, the harm big companies are doing ot the average American with scam issues is simply not valid.   These monopolies are harming far more people than anything  your listed.

Meanwhile, the White House will increase business taxes on these industries so they are no longer competitive with other non-US operations. Go figure.
Gee, how did it work years back when business taxes were appreciably higher and all these companies did just fine?
It’s not just about these companies. It’s about all companies. Hiring accelerated dramatically and family income went up by the most it has in decades.

Hmmm...how much are families making (those that aren’t in the tech sector)? It’s why this country (the USA) needs a liveable wage.

It depends upon what you mean by livable wage.   The fact is we can't compete with slave labor form China, India and some of the other countries that pay people $10 a month.   This is why Trumps increase on import duties made sense, at least a few sectors could stay in business.    The young people in these forums really don't understand how badly the working people in the USA got screwed over when trade was opened up with China.   By the way this is another case of where both the Democrats and the Republicans conspired in the decades since the opening of China, to destroy much of the manufacturing infrastructure in the USA.   Frankly greed at its worse.

In the end what is considered a livable wage is going to look more like poverty.   There just isn't the business climate to support high wage jobs in a way that would employ enough people.   lets face it Tesla can't employ everybody and they are the only company with a reasonable amount of employment growth in the USA.   Sadly Tesla has too much happening in China already, so is as much a part of the problem as any other major company in the USA.

If you don't believe that we are getting screwed over manufacturing wise in the USA, consider our beloved Apple.   When they went to China for manufacturing there was zero impact on pricing to consumers here in the USA (common with many that went to China).   Apple went to China to increase profits at the expense of both the people here and in China.   So if you are so concerned about a livable wage you really need to consider other manufactures of consumer goods besides Apple.    It is obvious that Apple doesn't give a damn about wages paid here, in China and now in India.   It is pretty clear that they speak with forked tongue, paint a rosy picture of corporate policy on one hand and when out of sight getting the lowest wage possible to the point that it is slavery.

  • Supreme Court argument casts doubt on Facebook, Twitter free speech rights

Justice Thomas should be commended for recognizing the inherent danger of having put so much power in the hands of a few private entities. Back in the day, politicians never imagined that these private corporations, instead of being platforms for public opinion, became publishers, censoring whatever they decide is inappropriate, misinformation, or offensive. It is past time for Congress to either revisit Section 230 or have SCOTUS to do it for them.

Don't newspapers and other media outlets (FOX, Newsmax, CNN, etc.) get to decide what they want to broadcast?  Aren't they then deciding what is inappropriate. what is misinformation or offensive and choose to call it out, or, as some do, portray it as real news?  I think they have MORE power than Twitter and FB.  If I don't like what Fox has to say, I have the freedom to watch a different news.  Anyone can choose to not use FB or Twitter if you don't like their content.
Yes they do. But they are publishers, and are responsible for, and for example can be sued for content on their media.  A common carrier can’t be.
But common carriers can deny service based on their terms/conditions. For example, how is an airline denying service to anyone not wearing a face covering any different from Facebook or Twitter denying service to anyone who posts an incitement to violence? Neither are discriminatory since they apply to anyone using the carrier. Changing the designation wouldn't have prevented certain conservative personalities from being banned from Facebook/Twitter since they were banned for terms/conditions violations.

In today's reality Martin Luther King would be banned for incitement.   This is the problem, people that don't like the message are blocking the free speech rights of those with a different view.   In the case of Facebook and Trump it was all about political views not the terms of service.

Likewise look at the banning of Parler which again had little to do with incitement and everything to do with a political view that Apple objected to.   I mean seriously a few bad people use Apples platforms, do you ban Apples platforms because of a few bad Apples?   This is the thing that people object to, it is the heavy handed attacks on political platforms for what a small minority have to say there.
