  • ACLU says US border agents have 'near-unfettered' ability to seize iPhones, other devices

    sflocal said:
I never take phones, computers or iPads with me when traveling outside the US. Why invite the scrutiny and why invite the possibility of seizure of these devices, if not by US law enforcement, by foreign immigration officers?
I suppose if it’s becoming more of an issue, one can always wipe their iPhone the moment the plane lands right?
Still may not prevent seizure of the device.
Might make a seizure more likely, actually. A freshly wiped phone? Suspicious!

  • Apple's temporary Fifth Avenue store coping with bed bug infestation

I’m commenting to kindly request that Appleinsider and the author of this blog please edit the first paragraph to remove the last sentence that speculates the infestation was caused by “homeless people.” I would kindly suggest that this is not your best work. It is an unnecessarily and hurtful speculation that needlessly demonizes an entire group of people. Also, speaking as a New Yorker who has unfortunately had extensive experience both having bed bugs and then successfully getting rid of them myself, your post reveals you likely aren’t fully aware of how they actually spread. Please edit the original post and perhaps consider cleaning up some of the trolling in the comments here.

Many thanks in advance for your thoughtful response in cleaning this up. I’m a longtime fan of Appleinsider, but to reiterate myself, this is really not your best work.
It's also not our speculation. The originating publication was the one that cited that. I've cleaned up the text a bit to make that more clear.
I would've just deleted it. It contributes to misunderstandings about how bed bugs propagate.

  • Apple adds 'Confirm Subscription' step to iOS app subscription purchases

This seems like a good change, though it could be improved by including the billing amount and frequency (eg. $3.99 billed every 30 days), just to make it totally clear what you're saying OK to, without having to cancel back to read the fine print.

  • Apple partnering with advocacy groups to foster critical thinking and news literacy

The US is not a democracy. It’s more akin to a representative democratic republic. People thinking the Federal government operates as a democracy is part of why people are so misinformed and emotionally overwrought these days. Remember when people were screaming and crying that their preferred candidate won the “popular vote”? The popular vote is irrelevant!
A political scientist would say that the US is a type of democracy: a representative democracy, rather than a direct democracy. There are no countries in the world (anymore) that are direct democracies (even referenda are typically framed through non-democratic processes). Madison did distinguish between "republican" and "pure" democracy or "mob rule," but not between "republic" and "democracy."

    Source: I am a political scientist. "We're a republic, not a democracy" sets my teeth on edge: it's almost always used in a partisan, not a scholarly, context, to mean not much more than "the majority wants something I don't want." If you want a similar argument from a libertarian point of view, see, for example, https://mises.org/wire/stop-saying-were-republic-not-democracy. ;

ps. I agree with you about the Electoral College. Them's the rules.

  • Rumor says 10.2- & 10.5-inch iPads in the works, launching separately

CoinX's record includes predicting that one of the 2018 iPad Pros would be 5.9 millimeters thick, and most notably exposing the names of the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR.

How do we know "CoinX" is a "reputable leaker"?  This sounds like nonsense.
You already quoted the relevant line of the article. Of course CoinX could be wrong this time.
