  • Starlink starts $99 per month 'Better than Nothing' internet service beta

The article waits until the second-to-last sentence to point out that the service is only being offered to customers *in some* regions of the US.  Kinda annoying.  That region is likely only northern states as StarLink has previously said so.

I'm desperately waiting for StarLink to become available as I've been WFH for 6 months on Verizon LTE with two bars :(  There's no broadband available in this "remote" part of NC (less than 1/2hr away from Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill - the technology hub of NC :-(

Does anyone know if the satellite dish will require separate power or uses Power over Ethernet?  When I built the house, I had the foresight to run coax and ethernet to the roof, but not power :-(

  • How to compare the sizes of the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone SE, and i...

Would have been nice to also see thicknesses and weight of the different model.  I looked it up for the SE: it's 22g lighter than the 12 mini and the 12 mini is 0.2mm thinner.  Man, on the one hand, I really want a more pocketable phone that can easily be used with one hand - on the other, my eyes are getting old and that 6.1" is looking tempting over my current 5.8" screen.  Since my days of wearing tight jeans is pretty much over, I'll likely give my eyes a break.

  • Face ID in 'iPhone 12' may gain speed alongside camera enhancements

After 8 months of covid, I could care less about a slightly faster face-id.  I sure hope Apple planned and integrated TouchID-on-power-button for the iPhone 12.  They did so on the new iPad - and obviously its design was complete before covid too, so I don't buy the argument "it was too late to integrate it when covid hit".

TouchID and later FaceID caused me to be more security conscious and changed to much longer, more secure password - no problem, since I rarely have to type it.  But since covid hit and FaceID become useless, it's been hell (not enough to shorten it though).  Anyway, the addition of TouchID alone would be reason enough for me to upgrade from my iPhone X.

  • iPhone camera and iOS 14 at crux of Facebook & Instagram spying lawsuit

Isn't this the kind of thing that Apple is checking for during the review process?
It's a review process, not a test process.  If the user gave the app access to the camera, a review process that is likely highly automated and can't take very long, given the millions of apps to review, isn't going to catch an app occasionally using the camera when it shouldn't.  Especially when "when it shouldn't" is not exactly easy to determine when the user gave the app permission to access it, overall.

  • Apple TV+ review: Ewan McGregor goes electric in engaging 'Long Way Up'

The frist series, "Long Way Round" was epic.  Lots of 'adventure' (well, as much as you can have with a film crew and support vehicles, I suppose).  Long Way Down was kinda ho-hum.  I'm looking forward to seeing what this one brings.
