  • Apple's mixed-reality headset has reached 'advanced' stage of development

If Apple indeed decides to sell the described device, it'll be a big flop.  Not so much because it won't be able to sell at all, but because it won't sell at the scale Apple needs.  Think about it: the described device will have powerful processing capabilities *on the headset* - well, that'll require a big battery.  The described device will also support VR/MR - again, more battery to drive high resolution displays.  While the device might also be capable of AR, who would want to wear big/ugly goggles for an extended period of time?  The only market for such goggles are gamers and geeks who don't mind looking foolish in public.

I always thought Apple's smartest approach would be to keep all energy-intensive tasks on the iPhone, which already has plenty of battery and CPU power and let the AR glasses merely act as a display and sensor-data gathering device.  This would allow for "normal" looking glasses that folks are already accustomed to wearing all day.  And THAT market would be worth Apple's while.

  • Ford adds Apple Maps EV routing support to Mustang Mach-E models

I wish Nissan supported it :-(  But, thankfully, PlugShare does a great job coming up with routes with stations that are within a car's range.

  • Netflix wants to crack down on users sharing passwords

    ronn said:
Netflix and others need to come up with a scheme similar to the legacy newspapers online access: create a limited number of free connections with a discount for new accounts and a reward for the account sharing the info.

I know there will be a lot of whining about this plan. But Netflix (and eventually others) have to do this. Too many are sharing with others outside of their households. Had a cousin that shared the account with her daughters when they went off to school. Who shared it with their friends and/or S/Os. My cousin wound up locked out of her own account. She had to call CS, reset the password and won't share her account with anyone now that the daughters have moved out.
This is already addressed adequately, in my opinion, by Netflix' current scheme of charging per concurrent streams.  In the scenario above where your cousin's daughter shared the login/password with lots of others, the account holder - your cousin - would have become aware of it pretty quickly as he wouldn't have been allowed to watch his/her shows!  I pay for several concurrent streams because I count my college-age daughter as well as my very-poor sister as part of my household.  Now Netflix also wants to charge per person - whether they watch or not.  That's just plain old greed.  If Netflix proceeds with this, I will unsubscribe.  Maybe I'll begin to do what I currently do with Apple TV+: start a subscription when they have something new and worthwhile (e.g. Ted Lasso) and then stop the subscription when I'm done.  My daughter and sister won't like it, but they get what they get in the name of fighting excessive greed.

  • 'Apple Car' team dissolved & 2025 launch may be in doubt says Ming-Chi Kuo

Considering how often I've read this team gets dissolved, I'm not sure the Apple Car will ever be a thing.
It's not even clear it ever was a thing!  That's the nice thing about rumors - you start one and then simply start another one saying the parties to the first rumor changed their plans.  Voila, you've gotten clicks/revenue on both.

Apple definitely wants to be in its customers' cars.  But I always thought their ambitions lay solely in CarPlay with a future version of CarPlay reaching further into the car - e.g. providing self-driving capabilities, etc.  Building your own cars is not only highly capital intensive, it's also not all that lucrative - at least not compared to the 30+% margins Apple gets from its iDevices and 70+% on its services.  Were any of the rumors that Apple was approaching car manufacturers to build a car from them ever substantiated?  I mean, I have no doubt Apple did talk to various manufacturers about such a partnership, but that could have just been to inform themselves what the margins, in fact, would be.

There is supposedly a "Project Titan" at Apple that relates to the car.  But that could simply be a software team working on self-driving features of a future CarPlay, no?
