Fitbit looks to challenge Apple Watch with new acquisitions
One wonders whether whatever Fitbit will eventually come up with as a true smart watch will be able to compete. To date, there have only been two truly successful app stores: Google Play and Apple's App iOS App Store. Because Apple has already made the huge investment in one store - setup the server infrastructure, created development kits and tools, and attracted millions of developers who know how to write apps for its devices, creating another store for, say, Apple Watch or Apple TV is pretty straight-forward. Not so much for Fitbit - everything has to be created from scratch. And attracting developers is going to be the toughest sell of all. Android developers won't be versed in Fitbit's entirely new platform and neither will iOS developers. Why would they want to learn? There aren't that many use cases for apps on a wrist - many (most?) of the apps on Apple Watch and Android Wear are extensions/companions to existing smartphone apps. How would that work on a Fitbit/iPhone or Fitbit/AndroidPhone combination?
I really don't see it. -
Honda rolls out 2017 CR-V with support for Apple's CarPlay
Soli said:AppleInsider said:The automaker didn't immediately say which trims will have the technology as an option, or how much it might cost.
Prices for the CR-V start at $24,045, but can go up to $33,695 or more for a top-of-the-line Touring model with all-wheel drive. -
All of Apple's OLED 'iPhone 8' models to use curved Samsung panels - report
Everyone is blathering on about Apple using a curved display - but nobody gives a *reason* for why! What, exactly, is the benefit of such a display?? Different color notifications like on the Samsung? That's it? That's not enough to offset the huge disadvantage of exposing more breakable material in the case of a fall.
A display with little or no bevel makes sense to me (more viewable real estate or smaller device dimensions) and so does the incorporation of je home button into the screen (same reason), but a curved display seems pointless - especially while the phone is in ones hand, when said hand would be covering that edge display. -
Long-distance wireless charging firm Energous partners with Apple supplier Dialog
I sure hope Apple is doing more testing of this technology than all the gung-ho purveyors of it. I'm talking about potential health effects here! In order to charge at a distance, the transmitter had to put out a signal many times stronger than WiFi - do. you really want to have your head near your phone (as in while you sleep) while that phone is receiving the charging signal? I sure as he11 don't. And for what? Just to save that 0.2sec it takes to plug in a lightning cable?
I'm not some tin-hat dude scared of tech - like most people I'm joined at the hip with my smartphone and watch - they both lie on the nightstand next to me each night. So i'm probably already getting a bit more EMF than is wise. But we're talking about 10-100+ times more. -
Kuo: Apple Watch shipments to decline in 2016 despite new models, lower prices
Kuo may be well connected, but that doesn't mean he is always right - he's had his share of wrong predictions. I think this may very well be one of those cases: I've been trying to score a Series 2 in Apple stores since they became available - I'm 0 for 10, in two Apple stores in two states (NC and NJ). To me it seems harder than for the original watch (been walking around with a cracked screen on my watch for the last 5 months, waiting for the new one :-(
