  • EU to propose common charger for all smartphones, ignores Apple's protest

Apple with it’s using USB-C for iPads but Lightning for others has no leg to stand on with this argument. It switched its laptops to USB-C creating huge ewaste. Apple likes to argue both sides of the coin when it comes to its costs. Very disingenuous.
I believe there is an order (or two) difference between the installed base of iPhones and laptops - i.e. Huge^2 ewaste.  As the article already said, Apple no longer bundles power supplies/cables with its iPhones and it's, perhaps, "seeding" its customer base with USB-C cables by making that the standard in iPads and MBs.  So in a year or two, when they change the connector on iPhone, its customers will already have some USB-C cables laying around.

  • Bell Labs descendant sues Apple for infringing on clutch of patents

Bell Northern Research is not any kind of descendent of Bell Labs.  They’ve got nothing to do with one another.  Bell Labs was the research division of the US’ Bell Telephone Company - aka AT&T or Ma Bell.   Bell Northern Research was the research arm of Canada’s Northern Telecom - aka Northern Electric or Bell Canada.

  • ProMotion display a major draw for 'iPhone 13,' says survey

...wonder who they surveyed.  I bet the majority of Apple iPhone users could care less (or even understand) "higher refresh rate display".  Heck, I'm a long-time Apple user and tech geek and I don't even care about higher refresh rates.

  • Apple engineers lack optimism about the Apple TV strategy, claims report

Apple’s core clientele are middle to upper income folks.  These folks are looking to simplify, not further clutter their living rooms.  That’s why, I think, Apple TV was never going to be a big seller.  It’s not  about it’s price - it’s about clutter and wiring.  As much as I’ve ridiculed Gene Munster for his years’ long prediction of an impending actual Apple TV set, I think that would be the only way Apple could have succeeded in the living room.  Apple should have sourced some 65”+ OLE panels from LG, added a thin & sexy frame to it, and built a user friendly UI on top.  Add some HomePod like built-in speakers & Homkit hub capability (maybe even throw in a wi-fi router a la AirPort) and Apple would have had a huge success.

  • Apple walks back macOS Monterey tab changes, refines search in iOS

    stompy said:
"Users who are a fan of the Monterey-style search bar can still enable the user interface design in the View menu."

Is there any such person, not counting Apple employees?
I actually liked the more compact design - the only thing that sucked was that there was no "Reload" button.  When I got the new beta, I re-enabled the "Monterey" way because Apple now added that reload button.

Alas, there is now a very annoying bug - you can't close the current tab using the 'x' to the left of the address bar (the 'x' appears as you hover over the web site icon).  Ctrl-W still works to close the tab, so no biggie, I guess, but I can never remember that keyboard shortcut (or most others, it seems :-(
