  • Microsoft blew $8.5 billion on Skype only to spend 14 years killing it

This is a typical… Lord William… and/or AI's editors… of bad news attracts page views… aka ad revenues.

Microsoft ‘invested’ $8 Billions 14 years ago… to buy tech and system… in which they bases the actual Team offerings.

It would be like saying that Apple ‘blew’ $3B to buy Drew's company… to build up Apple Music streaming service.
I get your comment. But going further than that, MS paid $12.5 Billion to purchase Nokia which became Windows Phone. What happened with that?  :s
    A learning experience, like Zune.

Yet another way I know I’m a geezer: CU-SeeMe “pioneered audio and video calling on the web” for me. Well, over the Internet, but ten years before Skype. Skype’s big improvement was that it offered good (for its pre-Microsoft day) encryption.

  • Ugreen 100W GaN Mini MagSafe Power Station review: Compact & powerful

    "Con: heavy for travel"

How heavy is it? Heavier than, say a second iPhone? Heavier than the default Apple charger?

    ----

Amazon cites a weight go 900 grams. The Apple 20, 30, 35 W dual, and 100 W AC adapters are 5 grams (seems impossible), 50 grams, 130 grams, and 310 grams, respectively. Of course, none of those Apple adapters has 2 USB-C + 1 USB-A ports plus two MagSafe pads. I don't know if any of the Apple adapters features GaN technology. On the other hand, no Apple charging products have had fire danger recalls against them in the last several years, whereas Anker....

  • Govee countertop ice maker review: Matter control to chill those beverages

I've owned a similar style ice maker (without the automation) and found the ice it produces to be disappointing. The ice melts quickly and is softer than refrigerator ice. While some ice is better than no ice, I wouldn't recommend it.
Yeah, the ice produced from this device appears to have lots of air which is why it's cloudy. That's probably why your soft ice melts quickly. Slow melting ice is made by freezing water slowly not fast.

For most people manually filled icecube trays put in the freezer produce the best ice.
Exactly. This is for people who want ice produced fast that will barely cool down their drinks but will noticeably water them down, simply because of the surface area to mass ratio of the empty cylinders. Or you could save about $165 at Amazon, and buy a set of four plastic ice trays that each produce 16 good-sized ice cubes with no holes in them so they take longer to melt completely. The same kind of ice trays that came with the long-gone fridge I bought 40 years ago — but I still have the ice trays, as well as a couple of others.

  • Apple to build AI servers in Houston, invest $500B in U.S. economy

Why is it the big corporations keep building fabs or factories in the worst of all possible places (south-central Arizona, which has no water to speak of, and looks to have less every year for the foreseeable future; Houston, which is ground zero for massive flooding associated with hurricanes; Taiwan, which has frequent earthquakes and typhoons, not to mention being in Beijing’s crosshairs)?
