  • Apple's Cook dismisses Indian phone market concerns, says company 'focused on best, not most'

Tim Cook reminds me more and more like a car salesmen. All he seems to be doing is trying to strike deals, which to me seems to smell of desperation. Apple didn't have to court buyers or seller's the products spoke for themselves.

I suggest Tim stays at home and focuses on the products, they will sell themselves if he does his job properly. The next 5 years will be very interesting.
Apple is the most profitable tech company on the planet.  You don't get that way unless you make products people love and value.  No concerned reporting from some tech blog or magazine is going change the way people feel about their products.  Tim is negotiating with a foreign government.  Making deals is what allows Apple to grow their business there. It already paid off with the Apple stores they are going to build so I think he knows what he is doing.

Samsung willing to scrape pennies for market share.

i say Apple invest billions in an exclusive movie/TV/Game studio and destroy these scumbags.
LOL. Apple invested "billions" in Beats. How'd that turn out?
Very good. They bought a popular and profitable headphone brand, launched a popular music service with no free tier and yet have 13MM paid subscribers in a little over a year, already a major player in the industry.

Apple Maps has been (partly) based on TomTom maps. There used to be two large commercial suppliers of GPS maps: Navteq and Teleatlas. Navteq was a Philips' daughter. Navteq was acquired by Nokia, Teleatlas by TomTom. Garmin these days still licences maps from Navteq. AFAIK, the big screw up at the beginning of Appe Maps was due to the conversion of TomTom data to Apple's internal format and adding meta data from various other sources. I hardly use it, still prefer Google maps. TomTom GO is my preferred GPS app in my car. Main reason for not using Apple's maps is the lack (it seems) of business info (shops etc). Nokia HERE is not bad as well, considering its free and offers pedestrian navigation. Great when you're on holiays in a strange city.
A while back, Apple announced they were going to build a data centre in Lisheenkyle, County Galway, here in Ireland.  When I searched for it in Apple Maps, it drew a blank and couldn't find it.  Perhaps someone at Apple read my post or more likely, someone at Apple tried to find it, couldn't,  and was rather embarrased that they wouldn't even be able to find their own data centre, because now if you do the search it drops a pin ..... in the wrong place.  I suppose near enough is good enough for Apple, though they might want to double check before they dig up and start building on some farmers field on the other side of the motorway.

Here is a screen shot from Here maps on my Nokia:

Google Maps agrees with HERE on the placement, though even that doesn't have anything like the detail as to local  place names.  Apple maps still lacks any detail.
I have had the opposite in my experience. Google maps took me the wrong way to a mysterious street that was a used car lot, whereas Apple maps took me to the correct location. Moral of the story, your mileage may vary but don't assume everyone has the same issues.

  • Leaked screens show Siri in Apple's upcoming OS X 10.12 with always-on 'Hey Siri'

Google announced Google Assistant at I/O today. From what I'm seeing in my Twitter feed it sounds impressive. home.google.com

All snark aside, I'm perplexed at how Apple let Siri languish for so long to the point where someone like Amazon could come in and start to own the space. And now Google is following suit. Considering how important privacy is to so many Apple had/has the perfect opportunity to create a solution for people who aren't comfortable using Google services. God I hope we get more than just current Siri on the Mac at WWDC. I hope Apple wows us with something we weren't expecting.
Amazon is hardly starting to own the space.  Google will always follow as you stated above, as will Microsoft and Amazon.  They followed the iPhone, iPad, Siri, Apple Pay etc. etc.   Those companies will always follow as Apple sets the trends in every sandbox they play in.

  • Largest shareholder urges struggling Pandora to sell itself to the highest bidder

Dead man walking. Pandora had their shot, but the failed to monetize. By the time the negotiate their deals with the music labels it will be too late unless then can undercut on price or offer something no one else can.  I have heard that their music algorithms are very good, though they never worked great for me.
