  • Apple's bitter dispute with Qualcomm not expected to be resolved anytime soon

Qualcomm really has been pushing it's luck.. With the FTC also filing it's own suite, I suspect Qualcomm is in a loosing battle.

  • Qualcomm accuses Foxconn & other Apple suppliers of breach of contract

I have trouble understanding how this is supposed to work.

They charge Pegatron for using their tech when making devices for Apple.
So what is Apple being charged for if the don't manufacture devices themselves?

I have no idea what the agreements said, but it looks to me like they can charge Apple or charge Pegatron, but I don't see how they can charge both companies for making the same unit.

Thats what the dispute is about, it's forcing royalties to be paid both by suppliers and the OEM (Apple) at same time.. Qualcomm is double dipping and basically holding the market hostage since its the only game in town; even though these patents are under FRAND.

Apple has started to buck this and play hardball.

and now, the EU has declared Qualcomm a monopoly in this space.. That does not bode well for them. With Google and others weighing in as well about Qualcomm's abuse of their position, I honestly think they might loose this one.

I suspect that some of the performance improvements noted are related to better SSD and RAM subsystems.

In any event an interesting update that won't be around long.    Why do I say that?   Well if the rumors about Apple stopping payment to Imagination for their GPU tech in two years is accurate, then that mean all Imagination using SoC will have to be out of Apples product lines by then.    In fact for this to happen and Apple to maintain their current release strategy I'm expecting this years new iPad Pros and iPhones to have this new Apple GPU.    That would allow them to phase out the old imagination hardware next year as the chips are handed down to the cheaper product lines.

Things are about to get real interesting for the tech standpoint in iOS land.
Since Apples license runs out in 2 years, and they informed Imagination they wouldn't be renewing. Apple could release for at least 2 more iterations (years) worth of this model. Thats a fairly good run for a product. Apple usually has updated a product like this at that point anyway. I suspect thats why they did this now or they wouldn't have announced this if they were not prepared to go at it right now;. Basically, they are in the exact position they want to be in.. no rush, but plenty of push when it comes to pressure against Imagination.

  • Intel 'Cannon Lake' Core processor suitable for MacBook Pro, iMac likely delayed, could sl...

"Intel needs competition," said no PC fan ever.
Except every other PC fan you apparently have not met. ROFL.. Virtually the entire community of PC users rejoiced when AMD Ryzen came out and look forward to AMD pushing Intel even harder.

I honestly hope AMD keeps this trend, and gets Apple's attention in the MacBook Pro lineup. I wouldn't mind seeing an comparable AMD APU, based n Ryzen, with R series GPU built in, touting 6 and 8 core multi-threaded APU's in a MacBook Pro.

This is what Intel should really be shaking in it's boots about. With competition, comes competitive pricing, both from AMD and Intel. Both PC market and Apple Mac/Macbook markets benefit from this..

I've never understood this. How much profit does the DoD make annually?

Governments aren't companies, and we aren't customers. We own the government - they work for us.

Exactly, we ARE the board of this company; not the customers.
