AirTag crucial to recovery of $5 million of stolen tools in Metro DC
Apple's position is that AirTags are for LOST items, not STOLEN items. As some people indicated here, a smart thief can detect if they are holding an AirTag and then (if they have the time and skill) find and remove the AirTag.
