  • Apple Music rebrands curated alternative playlist to ALT CTRL

Spotify still rules the curation roost with Discover Weekly and Release Radar.

  • iPhone's global marketshare dips to 10.1% amid rise of Samsung & Chinese brands

From 33% market share to 10% and dropping. It’s uncanny how this is playing out just like desktop PC’s. I see a lot of “yah, but...”’s commenting here from worried investors. As they should be. I don’t like Tim’s direction of only catering to the premium market - especially if selling ‘services’ is the future of Apple, as one feeds the other. More users in the ecosystem is the future and Apple under Cook with $10k Mac pros and 2k phones - is not going to achieve that. Throttling people’s property, $800 to fix a stuck key, gluing everything down... this is not user friendly behaviour that gets rewarded on the balance sheet in the long run. We can only hope a visionary with some sense off reality is waiting in the wings somewhere to take over the reins.

  • Streaming holdout Tool coming to Apple Music, others on Aug. 2

Streaming is super cool as a consumer. As an artist of sorts, it's a downer to see my album rack up 171 individual track listens, resulting in .0698 cents being credited to my account. I suppose .003 cents per listen would be more fun for someone with millions of fans. But, I reckon that's the price for some schmuck in middle of nowhere to get listens all over the world. That part is great.

I prefer my artists hungry and destitute - can really hear the urgency and pain behind their work. Soon as they get signed that passion is gone as they live the good life on mac ‘n cheese and gourmet hot dogs.

  • Apple expects 'iPhone 11' sales to match 2018 iPhone XS sales figures

Prices need to come down. Software augmentation isn’t going to be enough of a draw to justify $2000 phones going forward. In general, people mostly want a good camera, long battery, and good price for quality. Now that Apple can’t throttle people’s phones to persuade upgrades - expect them to cut lifespan of OS upgrades as a mechanism - like they are doing with the 6’s. This is going to grow old fast on the consumer and make people think twice about the cost. People don’t buy new computers every 2 years - and Apple is charging computer prices for phones now.

Apple must not talk itself into believing that it cannot gain more market share. It must act aggressively, speed up the cycle, and push more variety of devices, i.e., do what they have done to the iPad line up to the iPhone line up.
Blah, blah, blah, yada, yada, yada. The Macintosh has never had more than a 10% share of the worldwide market and it has been a success for Apple all these years. Discerning customers see the value and TCO of Apple products and are very willing to pay the mythical Apple Tax. When has Apple EVER had a dominating share of ANY market? They have literally created or boosted markets out of thin air (personal computers, portable music players, smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, etc) only to see them dominated by cheap knock-offs and lookalikes. Through it all Apple has remained true to its mission statement to provide well designed, reliable, usable products that customers like to use. Again, tech blog forums like AI are filled with comments from a market segment that doesn’t value design, only cares about specs, and wants everything cheap.
It’s as if you have zero knowledge of Apple’s history.
Apple had the exact same business model issues with desktops and their hubris had the company go bankrupt - then Bill Gates had to step in and infuse them with cash to keep them afloat.
The only thing that saved them was SJ coming back and designing a revolutionary product in the iPod. Then the new iMac and G3 line... OSX, Pro Tools...

So now we seem to have history repeating itself with yet again the same hubris and results... and who is going to revolutionize a new industry for Apple? Tim? He’s Scully 2.0

The only question is - how fast can Apple blow through half a Trillion in cash and will they wise up before they do?
