Amazon Echo vulnerability allows hackers to eavesdrop with always-on microphone
anantksundaram said:Not a fan of Echo, and chances are zero I'll be getting one anytime, but c'mon, this is a non-story. One, it needs physical access. Two, it can still be muted physically.
That's not a hack. Heck, it would be simpler for someone to install a bug in your house if they were that desperate. -

Apple reveals 4K and HDR plans in iTunes, hinting revamped Apple TV may arrive soon
lkrupp said:Can we settle an ongoing argument about 4K streaming? How much bandwidth is recommended for reliable 4K streaming? I have seen figures of around 20mbps. Now what is the average bandwidth available in the U.S. right now? I myself have a 12mbps DSL line so I am assuming 4K streaming would be useless to me, especially if other devices were consuming bandwidth online at the same time. And while we're at it my DSL line is 1mbps upstream. Using an online bandwidth calculator I figured it would take 120 hours to upload 50GB of my Photos library. This makes cloud computing a non-starter for me and I assume millions of others. -

A new Apple TV with 4K gaming will be amazing and convince a few gamers to buy. -
iRobot CEO insists company won't sell Roomba home data [u]
teaearlegreyhot said:Forget selling the data, I ALSO wouldn't want the data to be GIVEN away. Nor do I want it to become accessible to Google, when Google buys iRobot. In short, I don't want iRobot to be transmitting ANY data outside of my home. The data belongs to ME, not to them. They should not have it AT ALL.
Far too many companies are able to "buy" data simply by buying the company that holds the data. Happens all the time. Should be stopped!
Similarly, this is why there will be no Alexa in my home. Ever.
