I will likely stay on LTE(or 5G E) service long as possible. It's more than OK. At this point when 5G coverage is limited than why pay more for 5G phone and 5G service.

Apple is more than smart to target 5G iPhone in 2020. In 2021 with competition, coverage will increase and prices of 5G service may comedown for some to justify paying.

5G is a global battle, Hope Intel is capable of producing 5G modem in-time for Apple's 2020 iPhone. People are not jumping up and down for 5g iphone in 2019 or 2020 or run in mass to buy/upgrade but symbolic that Apple have it too. We all know there won't be enough 5G coverage until 2022..

From my point of view, Apple either overlooked need for a home-grown 5G modem chip or over trusted Intel's ability to finish 5G modem on schedule. If Intel 10nm chip history is any witness, I would not trust Intel's promise vs on-time delivery. What happens if Intel prioritizes efforts to other chips development and fabrication where they make higher margins.

Don't believe what you read or hear. Apple can get 5G modem chips from other manufacturers like MediaTek,Samsung. And if Intel can offer 5G modem engineering development sample chip in early 2019 than Intel will have iPhone ready 5G chip for 2020. Based on past experience, Intel knows not to loose Apple's business and will make it happen no matter what.

Furthermore, rumor about 2020 iphones with screen sizes 5.42-inch, 6.06-inch and 6.67-inch diagonally will make it perfect upgrade for millions of iPhone users holding on to older iPhones. The 5.42 screen(in iphone 6/7/8 4.7" frame) is new smaller 4" replacement iPhone, 6.06 is new XR, 6.67 MAX is even bigger. Every such news is rumor/fake until it really happens.

It is not that Apple engineering can not do but to come up high quality product at much lower COST is not worth the efforts. Apple said 100% true "multiple co-operative flux generators' into a practical consumer item for a REASONABLE COST had too many hurdles".
