Apple seems to have all the right ingredients to make a big play in the Console Gaming market, but they've held off so far.  They have hardware, software, SDK, a large portfolio of mobile games, and a vibrant Developer community.  They also have R&D into VR and AR.  The AppleTV 4 doesn't seem to have gained much traction as a gaming platform... at least I'm not hearing much chatter on the Internet related to it.  Maybe Apple will eventually release a product which is explicitly targeted at the traditional Console Gaming market.

A friend at work said, "I'm going to try the new Google Pixel".

(... not, "I'm going to switch to iPhone")

I'm wondering about the "spillover effect" of the repuation-hit onto the rest of Samsung's smartphones.

This disaster is only for the Note 7 product.  But will average consumers make that distinction or just hear "Samsung" and associate the safety issue -- in their minds -- with other Samsung phones (e.g., S7)?  If so, the damage (financial & brand) goes much farther than the market-value of the Note 7 product..

The densely packed and interwoven technology that we all just casually carry around on a daily basis is truly amazing.

And yet... Consumer Reports says the only reason to be even consider buying an iPhone 7 is the water-resistance.  Nothing else really changed (according to them!).
