  • Video: As Dropbox IPO goes live, should you consider switching to iCloud Drive?

The answer is simple: I trust Apple and I do not trust Dropbox.
I would agree Apple is perhaps the only company I would trust with my data. That being said, for work we use Dropbox and an app called Sookasa. Sookasa encrypts/decrypts the files on the fly as they are upload/download from Dropbox. That way we don't have to worry about any nefarious activity done by our cloud provider (or those who would breach them) ... to be clear Dropbox has never given me cause for concern but it's nice to know my data is secure even in a worst case scenario. It is hard to beat the up time and reliability of Dropbox, though I have not directly compared them to others.

I use iCloud drive for personal and it seems to work fine as well.

  • Apple debuts new iPhone X 'Unlock' commercial, focusing on Face ID

    AWarr said:
It would be a great ad if FaceID didn't suck. I miss TouchID every day. Reprogrammed my stupid phone at least half a dozen times, and on a good day FaceID works 60% of the time for me. I miss TouchID so much I've actually considered upgrading to an iPhone 8. Yes, I said upgrading.
You must be holding it wrong!

Seriously though, FaceID works more or less flawlessly. If you are having issues it is likely because: a) you are not looking at it when trying to unlock it (designed to require this for security reasons) or b) you are holding it too close to your face (happens to me quite often when I am lying in bed and try to unlock my phone).

  • Google claims Android is "as safe as the competition" despite its outdated install base

Wait I got this. In the past Android prevented few installs of PHA and now this last year they prevented 10 million installs. That is very high rate of growth, if you extrapolate that rate of growth out over a forever timeline then Android will eventually be blocking an infinite amount of PHA, so essentially they have already won this race. Look I am not dissing Apple and propping up Android with strawman arguments; Apple can’t top infinity exponential growth, that’s science.

  • Watch: iPhone X takes on Samsung's Galaxy S9+ in benchmarking bonanza

I think these results say a whole lot more about how well Samsung is doing, versus how well Apple is maintaining its lead. Given that Apple has 100% control of both software and hardware, one would think Apple would be light years ahead, which doesn't seem to be the case. Either Apple is slipping or Samsung is kicking ass. Or a little bit of both. But I think Apple is slipping, IMHO. Their scores should be off-the-charts compared to Samsung, yet the Korean juggernaut, who also makes refrigerators and washing machines, is right there.

If I were Apple, I'd be a little ashamed of how poorly I'm doing compared to a washing-machine company.

This is the equivalent of a Toyota Yaris keeping up with me in my Porsche 911 GT3 as I do hot laps at Nürburgring.
This comes down to efficiency. Samsung has thus far simply added more RAM, battery, higher gigahertz processor to compensate for being horribly inefficiency. They are fast approaching the limits of this type of design approach. Apple designs with efficiency in mind from conceptualization to finished product. Samsung hasn’t done any of this leg work and in many cases doesn’t have the ability to it even if they had the will to do so. When the limit is reached, Apple will be close to a decade ahead in design/optimization. It’s game over for Samsung as they do not have the ASP necessary support catching up (might not even be possible given they are limited by Android).

  • Refurbished, high-end iPhones are suffocating the growth of cheap new Androids

The article seems (as usual) extremely biased against Android and for Apple.  Since you can buy $50 Android phones, of course performance issues will be higher than a $600 iPhone. I'm pretty sure if there was a $199 iPhone, it would suck, performance wise, on iOS 11 also.

And, $50 savings on an iPhone refurb?  I'll take NEW for that extra $50, thank you.  Who would buy a refurb just to save $50?
Spoken like a person who never ponied up the cash for an iPhone (educated guess). Yes you can get a new Android for $50, but your getting very subpar experience even if it is running a two year old paired down OS, so the hardware is capable of running it. Working in such an environment causes many adverse effects and unintended consequences (is a consequence really unintended if those designing and selling it know in advance and simply don’t care?). These effects are numerous and also don’t lend to a succinct explanation so I’ll spare you, however I would use this, albeit not perfect, anology. Would you rather have a new Kia/Chevy or a year old Mercedes/Toyota.
