  • FBI forensic expert calls Apple 'evil genius' for strengthening iPhone encryption

    eightzero said:
This is easily handled. The US government simply passes a law requiring the owners of devices that employ encryption to provide the government with their passwords. Enforcement of the law is not Apple's job.
Or they could make waterboarding legal again. That would be a pretty easy way to obtain the user's passcode. The White House probably has the legal authority to reinstate it, even in the US, with just an executive order. Of course it would be immediately blocked by a federal judge and then go to the supreme court. The US is not immune to becoming a police state.

  • Apple responds to investor criticism over heavy smartphone use by children, says parental ...

I'm not so sure how feasible that would be with email since that's usually just a third party, but if anybody could do it, it would be Apple.
If the only email the child had was an iCloud address, Apple would have control end to end. That feature is already available on macOS, but only for email, not messages. macOS has much better parental controls than iOS but still not enough in my opinion. It should be more like firewall settings. Deny everything first and then add privileges with a very granular scope.

  • Phyn Plus promises iPhone-connected water pressure monitoring

I like the idea that it could shut down the main supply in case of a leak, especially while on vacation, but also while at work or any time you are away from the home. Here in Southern California there is always the risk of an earthquake which could cause a ruptured pipe, although unlikely in my case because we have a PEX system which is very resistant to damage from seismic activity. I wish there was a similar device for the natural gas line. When we go on vacation I always shut the gas off at the meter, but shutting it off when just leaving for the day would be pretty paranoid because it does take a while to get all the gas appliances running again once it is turned back on.

  • Limited Apple Watch controls for select Whirlpool appliances coming in 2018

I would disagree that manual labor is bad for you, despite there being some particular chores that might stress your back if not done properly.
It really depends on what type and to what degree you are doing manual labor. For example the guy who mows our grass is all hunched over from 10 hours a day for 25 years of manual labor and he is still overweight.

Heck if we'd all just do a bit more manual labor we wouldn't need gym memberships. Nothing wrong with mowing our own lawns, digging a few holes for the fence posts, or walking up or down a flight of stairs. To me it's silly to hire someone to clean house or dig holes for the new landscaping but pay for a personal trainer to get in shape because you aren't active enough.

Manual labor isn't particularly good for you. Mowing the yard or digging post holes is stressful, especially on the lower back. Yoga, stretching, walking, and even lifting weights (if done correctly) are low impact and condition all of your muscles, and to some degree, your mind. One of the biggest factors for staying healthy and fit though, is your diet and sleep habits.
