  • Apple Health data used to convict man in wife's death

    elijahg said:
i really don't think that "18 steps" being shown on a health tracker is proof of murder... My watch used to show steps when I was asleep pre-watchOS 7.
Remember to discriminate between the question of guilt vs. the vetting of the defendant’s alibi 🙄😉
—the “18 steps” were (hopefully) not introduced as direct evidence of murder, but probably as a means to undermine the defendant’s alibi: If nobody believes that you slept while your wife was assaulted elsewhere in the house, then everybody will believe that you were the sorry-ass, CSI-trained semi-human that screwed yourself!

  • Apple delays Face ID for 2021 iMac

Welp, that’s very disappointing, but I do appreciate this info being leaked out. It would’ve have been a huge disappointment if I was holding my breath for this. I realize Apple tries to spread out the enthusiasm with iterative improvements for the sake of predictable sales growth (which is their prerogative as the far and away leader of consumer electronics), but it would be nice for them to go more all-in sometimes. I’ve been craving an iMac so bad, but I’m going to wait. Maybe I’ll buy a refurbished 21” to hold me over until Face ID is included, not sure yet. But Apple, please, for the love of ‘Social Justice,’ please make the second gen Apple Silicon iMac more than just a Face ID update to make it worth the wait. Thank you!
—like, say, upending the status quo by moving their entire lineup of pc’s from the x86-industry consensus to a radical new take on chip-design within 2 years? 😉🍏👀

  • Windows on Apple Silicon is up to Microsoft, says Craig Federighi

It would be so easy now for Apple to build an iPad running macOS on the M1 chip.

— released your “fantasy” iPad years ago. It’s called an iPad Pro! MacOS Big Sur on iPad (hardware) would be a PR- and Support-nightmare: what is what?—am I on iPadOS or iPad-hardware or  M1-based hardware running iPadOS...

Everything is already in place.  It would also be just as easy for Apple to build a touch-screen laptop.  Apple has so many options, but they're going to milk the profits for themselves.  Apple could likely easily undercut all the cheap X86 laptops with a low-, low-end MacBook Lite or something similar and it would be quite powerful.  I'll bet those M1 chips are relatively cheap to fabricate although I don't know what the yield numbers are.  Well, further down the line after millions of M1 chips have been made, I'm sure the economies of scale would kick in.

I'm so looking forward to an M1 MacBook with a dedicated/discrete Apple Silicon GPU.

Now that would be a beast.  Hat's off to Apple for disrupting the X86 platform.  I know Apple isn't going to get much credit for anything special but it should pay off very well for Apple.

— could have released such a beast, but chose not to! Why?—google “ M1 performance benchmark”! In contrast to the  M1-strategy with System-On-Chip, x86-systems are very much Beasts and the undisputed Kings of Power—Power consumption—that is!

  • Apple's iPhone 12 mini has us questioning our larger phones

The choice in phone sizes is great this year.   The mini’s screen area approaches the screen area of the older 8 plus but is much easier to hold.   I just wish I could get some really good data on whether or not magnets in the 12 series are going to be safe near the body for long periods.  I mean after all,  holding a phone close to your ear while on call puts the magnets very close to inner ear and the eyes.  I don’t want to sound like an alarmist but I think about things like this.   Neodymium type magnets are the strongest type it appears.  Just not thrilled with having MagSafe yet.
boy- let’s hope you never need an MRI!
No reason to worry—an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a good example why MagSafe is a non-issue (unless you carry shrapnel, metallic heart valve etc in your body).

An MRI is somewhat like a CT-scanner, that creates a tremendously strong magnetic field around the body. Our bodies are mainly composed of water—H2O—of which the hydrogen atom are most easily affected by a magnetic field. Inside the MRI, this results in polarization and alignment of all the hydrogen atoms 😳
By recording the position of the excitatory atoms (~ magnets), when the magnetic fields are released, the MRI can create a 3D image of the body.
Contrary, perhaps to the above description, an MRI is completely harmless, although it makes a very loud and scary symphony of noise 😳

The question is valid, though—especially before implementing a new technology.

  • How Apple Silicon on a M1 Mac changes monitor support and what you can connect

    neilm said:
Very surprised the M1 MBP can only support a single external monitor. Probably half our current MBP users have a dual monitor setup, usually a pair of 4K, in addition to the built in display. This limitation takes the M1 off my list.

Clearly it’s not an inherent limitation of the M1 GPU, since the M1 mini can drive dual monitors.
So can the M1 in the MBP or MBA. The internal display just counts as one of the two.

It is absolutely a limitation of the M1.
In conclusion:  M1 is hardware-limited to two displays—either internal + external or two external displays.

How/if Sidecar and MBA/MBP ( M1) in Clamshell-mode is affected by this limitation is presently uncertain.
