  • Tim Cook says AR & VR will be revolutionary, but the public will need education

I'm going to need Tim Cook to extensively educate me on why I should spend $1,000-3,000 to escape reality.
It's actually much worse than that.  You are not only paying $3000, but you are paying that money for a heavy gizmo on your head!  That's crazy.

Now if someone wants to create a Holodeck experience like Star Trek TNG, bring it on!  But a $3k device on my head?  Absolutely not!

I expect the device will be untethered, unlike the above glasses, it will likely launch with 3nm hardware so early 2023, it will have its own OS and I don't think the price will start above $999. This is where things like Continuity and Universal Control will work well because it will allow controlling a Mac/iPad/iPhone seamlessly. When people try them on in store and see an Apple TV+ show/movie being broadcast at 100"+ in front of them, that will be enough for people to want them. Students will love them in their dorm rooms for streaming movies.
100"+ display would require at least 8K streaming and 8K resolution. No one would buy a head mounted computer to watch a 720p movie upscaled on 100"+ display.

  • Apple introduces iPhone 14 & iPhone 14 Plus -- with satellite connectivity

The satellite texting feature is easy enough to deploy across North America because the US and Canada have no restrictions on free speech, but I doubt that it will ever be deployed across Asia or the Middle East because it's outside the reach of the "Great IT Wall" that many countries have built. It would bypass government control on communications. Since satellites cannot pinpoint which side of a border you are on, they can't respect the wishes of dictators to block data from their countries. And since Apple is paying for the service, it is Apple who would get in trouble with the dictatorships.

Unless perhaps the satellite texting capability does not support iMessage, and the satellite data is all unencrypted for the world to see. Then maybe dictatorships won't object. But if so, then Apple seems to be contradicting its oft-stated belief that "privacy is a fundamental human right." This will get harder to defend as the size of the satellite text messages increase over the next ten years, because Apple will find itself under pressure to encrypt those messages.
I don’t think text messaging like
in imessage is possible. Only contacting emergency response people.
And its only available in the US/Canada.
Yes, you are probably right that texting services are limited to emergency services, but that doesn't contradict anything I said. It will still be prohibited by dictatorships, right? And it's probably unencrypted, right?
Since the relay service will be built by Apple, most probably it will consist of some sort of byte-code. So your dream of ultimate guerilla-warfare smartphone may be postponed to another century.

  • There's hope that older Macs will be able to run macOS Ventura

The only reason to run a more recent OS on an old hardware is when some mainstream and indispensable applications dictate a minimum OS version. Otherwise tinkering just for the pleasure to "follow the trends" doesn't make sense,

  • Apple's macOS Ventura beta review: great new features, but some concerns

I don't get what is the benefit of Stage Manager over multiple desktops. With one swipe you can switch between desktops. In Stage Manager you need to point and click. If you can *still* work in full screen mode then Stage Manager is totally useless, obviously, because the front app should cover it. They can make it somehow reappear by pointing to the left but I can't imagine Stage Manager appearing on top of the full screen front window. If Stage Manager coexists with multiple desktops, then I am almost sure that I will turn it off and continue with multiple desktops as usual. The multiple desktops paradigm is the most efficient solution for small screens, also consistent with left-right app switching on iPad OS.

  • Despite Thunderbolt, iPad to Mac communication is still a mess

"We tested the connection issue first using Apple's Thunderbolt 4 cable included with the Studio Displayand a Satechi Thunderbolt 4 cable that was newly purchased. When either cable was used, the iPad Pro would flash in and out of Finder as if the cable was shorted or broken somehow."

That flashing in and out of Finder occurs with Lightning cables as well, and almost after every iOS/iPadOS update. Apple's suggestion was to reset Location and Privacy first, if no solution then to reset Network settings. This the old "Trust this computer/iPad/iPhone" issue. With Lightning, the use of an original or Apple-certified cable is a must.
