  • Apple now calls itself a gaming company fighting with Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo

    mcdave said:
M1 could be a viable target for games developers. They’re locked into x86/DirectX right now but they know ARM on Windows is inevitable and if they’re entertaining ARM the Vulkan/Android & Metal/AppleOS is also worthwhile.  I wonder how many gamers are on mid-spec vs high-spec GPUs.
The lack of availability of high-end GPUs may force game devs to diversify.
No. They depend on the sponsorship of consumer grade graphic card makers. Games are written for cards, not for users or platforms,

  • Apple facing another lawsuit claiming media purchase buttons are misleading

Dead horse beaten again and again. The publisher withdraws the movie from iTunes and makes it unavailable for download. It is the user's responsibility to download and store the purchased copy. iTunes is not customers' free eternal repository. Copyright law beats the consumer law, there is nothing to do.

  • Paddle wants to undercut App Store fees, thinks Apple will allow it

Whatever their method is, Apple may implement the same and can still maintain its profits. For example, let's consider a coupon based payment system. Apple may drop the in-app payment method altogether and implement "app coupons". Just like iTunes coupons sold everywhere. Such "app coupons" may be sold both by Apple and many third parties. In such a scheme, Apple would still sell the huge majority of those "app coupons" and third parties would sell only a tiny percentage. Because no one would bother to switch stores for the sake of providing "more profit to the developer". Competition would be met and everyone would be happy, except those third parties.

  • Bitcoin scammers steal $69k using iPhone 13 event as a lure

Scammers utilized a fake event stream, a faked Apple website, and the promise of free Bitcoin to scam unsuspecting fans during the iPhone 13 reveal event.

This obvious scam earned $69k in Bitcoin. Image source: Zscaler

People looking for the Apple Event on September 14 may have stumbled into a lookalike stream, showing old interviews with Apple CEO Tim Cook instead of the "California Streaming" stream. Those who stuck around saw messages pop up in the video telling them to visit a special website: www.2021.apple.org.

As reported by Zscaler, the website looked like a fake version of Apple's website, advertising a Bitcoin giveaway. All the person had to do was send 0.1 to 20 Bitcoin through a QR code to have double that amount sent back.

This was a scam, but there was just enough care taken to convince people it was legitimate. Over $69k was sent to that Bitcoin wallet showing the scheme was highly successful.

Those with some technological background might spot the several flaws with the website, from the grammar problems to the .org URL. However, most people with just a passing understanding of technology could have easily mistaken such a website for a legitimate promotion.

The scammer's website is currently down and will likely remain down after successfully swindling folks out of $69,000 in Bitcoin.

Scams like this have occurred on YouTube before, with random channels being hacked to display Bitcoin promotions. Steve Wozniak is suing YouTube over that event, since his likeness was used to promote the Bitcoin fraud.

    Read on AppleInsider
This is not www(dot)2021(dot)apple(dot)org. apple(dot)org is a valid domain, apparently not related to Apple.

The picture already shows the fake domain as "2021apple", without the dot in between.

  • Pay up or get out: Apple's options for South Korea's App Store law

Exciting times. I've been arguing for this for years and that's why so many people hate me on this forum.
So you believe a developer has every right in the world to post their apps for free on the Apple App Store? Give me one legitimate reason why Apple should be required to host these apps for free. Apple doesn't charge for free apps but could start doing that if they wanted to. Apple could also start charging developers to even put their apps on the Apple App Store and if these stupid laws pass, I'm all for Apple doing that. There's no way anyone could force Apple to host things on their servers for free. It would be like me hosting your email server on my hardware, which I maintain, for free. Get a grip, I'd never do that and I doubt any company would do that. This shows how stupid these laws are.

Of course, if you want to have your own payment system, then be prepared for Apple to start charging you a hosting fee for every download and install of that app. That's only fair isn't it?
No. As a developer, I feel I should not be limited to Apple's way of distributing apps to my users.

It's as simple as that. I won't use their infrastructure and they won't get any money from me (other than my developers subscription).
What about using the software development libraries you’ve been using all along to create apps?  What if Apple decides they want their 30% for those going forward, but you can use your own payment gateway.  Then if you want to avoid the 30% you simple need to develop your own SDK binaries, oh, and an OS that runs them all. Maybe Apple will even allow you to side load all that, after they finish suing you for any copyright infringement you create along the way.
Then they'd be stupid and would likely lose developers. I pay nothing for the various Windows SDKs that I use including the Win32 API and the various .Net frameworks. I have to pay for my development tools (like Visual Studio) through an MSN Pro subscription.

I guess all the Apple people don't realize that it's only in the Apple world that you have to pay to play. The Windows world has never been like that.
You don't pay anything for macOS SDKs, APIs and frameworks either. So what's your point?

Darwin, which is the core of macOS, is open source. You can build a whole alternative environment on Darwin without using any of the Apple supplied higher level OS layers and utilities. This is not possible with iOS devices, because the architecture is totally different. Apple does not give you such a license as to build your own higher OS levels and utilities. You will use UIKit or none.
