  • Further delves into the leaked iOS 11 'gold master' reveal Face ID setup animation

    "Enroll Face"?

I could be wrong, but this setup does not look like TouchID is going to be included.

not at all. Touch ID could be on another screen
Unlikely. The title of the Settings pane is "FaceID & Passcode". That's all we get.

  • Stanford study finds Apple Watch top-notch heart rate monitor, mediocre calorie counter

I've speculated that my 1st Gen Apple Watch gives me inaccurate calorie measurements. I'm just guessing but I feel like they tend to come in fairly low during my intense workouts and higher than I expect for walks. For instance, today I took my daughter and my dog for a walk. It was about 40 minutes and we covered 1.8 miles. My watch reported 128 calories burned or 3.2 calories per minute. Compare that to Sunday morning when I did an hour of kickboxing. Intense cardio, sweat everywhere. Apple Watch says I burned 374 calories or 6.23 calories per minute. Maybe it's just me but my workout FEELS like I'm working much more than twice as hard than the leisurely walk with my family. I hope this can be addressed in a future software update.
During workout the calorie calculation is based on heart rate, otherwise it is based on step count or other motion. So the calculation during workout is more precise. That is also the flaw of the study totally ignoring calculation methods.

  • Presentation slide again suggests 'iPhone 8' Touch ID sensor on rear of device

Real or fake, I'm wondering why the article doesn't speculate on that rear circular cutout being for wireless charging rather than Touch ID. Perhaps I'm missing something.
Because there's no need for there to be a case cutout for any internal coil.
There is. If the case is made of aluminum.
    Not since 2015.

That charging pad requires... a desk. Its size is multiples of an iPhone's.

  • Windows malware 'Snake' ported to Mac for first time, masquerades as Adobe Flash

A piece of malware long targeting Windows users -- known sometimes as "Snake," "Turla," or "Uroboros" -- is now reportedly being turned against Mac owners.

    ...
Infection is unlikely not just because of Gatekeeper, but because the file must be intentionally downloaded and run, for instance when delivered as an email attachment.
Intentional download is not required, you can get it via any advertising redirect. If Safari's "Open safe files after downloading" setting is enabled, the malware is run and it appears as a legitimate macOS dialog.

Check your Downloads folder frequently to discover how much of malware you receive via advertising each day...

  • Steve Jobs initially blasted Genius Bars at Apple stores, says former retail head

    AppleZulu said:
The majority of the crowd in Apple Stores are those waiting for a Genius Bar appointment. Assembling sales and support at the same place is not such a big idea. Disputes occur and certainly these affect sales negatively.
I would dispute your first assertion. I don't hang out in the Apple Store every day, but my personal observations would be that a significant majority are there for browsing and sales. Also, given that Apple Stores generate more revenue-per-square-foot than any other retailer, most of those people are probably not just hanging around waiting for tech support. That same factoid probably bursts the bubble on your other assertion, too. Sales and support in the same room seems to have worked just fine.

Also, at least anecdotally, I can say I've never seen a customer at the Genius Bar throw a fit, much less cause a scene that clears out the sales floor. I'm sure someone somewhere gets angry every once in a while, but clearly the benefits of the operation vastly outweigh the risks.
I just tried to expose Steve Jobs' probable point of view. Selling is a very delicate matter, any single emotional manner, not necessarily in the form of shouting, may ruin a sale developing on a distant table. You can train your personnel to prevent such manners but you cannot train customers.

Take a simple example: whether an incident is covered by warranty or not. No salesman can tolerate such a dispute occur in the presence of a potential buyer.
