  • Massive iPhone array will replace English Premiere League's awful video referee tech

Feel sorry for the person that has to go around all the 28 iPhones tapping the "are you still sure you want this app to access the camera" alert 🤣
28 cameras is still only 7 per quarter of the pitch, assuming they are on both sides. That's a camera every 7m or so. But yes, maintenance sounds like a full-time job!

  • Massive iPhone array will replace English Premiere League's awful video referee tech

VAR worked well in European games and internationals. It is not the tech that's faulty in England. It's the officials. There is enough inconsistency in the stats to show bias from officials. The poor view of the video cameras and parallax and perspective problems made this worse, as fans never got an official explanation for a given decision until several days later.

That said, I am interested to see how this works. Goal-line tech [which. uses a different system] has worked well for years but offside can occur anywhere in a half of the field, so positioning is rather important.

  • How to add and transfer eSIMs to iPhone

There are lots of apps to allow you to buy data time on an eSIM, for travel in another country.

I have yet to hear an advantage to the user. US carriers have made them difficult to implement and difficult to change. AT&T told me I had to visit their store, even though I am outside the US. Mint couldn’t handle it at all. Telcel advertises them but they are only available in the big cities. A physical SIM can be yanked and replaced.

  • AccountEdge abandons Catalina compatibility, customers looking for alternatives

Moving your company's accounts from one software package to another, without feature or data loss, is non-trivial. I can understand, even as a technical user, why people find ways and reasons not to move.

In other news, Intuit has had many years to make its QuickBooks software feature-compatible with the Windows version. This too did not happen. Users can't migrate from Windows to the MacOS version.

  • Facial recognition bolstered by mass database scraping, but not from Apple

    applejeff said:
What is not explained, as far as I can see, is what benefit the AI researchers obtain from the databases of faces. Yes, they can train the programs to recognize that there is, indeed, a face in the picture but it doesn’t appear that they have other data to match against it. They don’t know whose faces they are. What am I missing? What are the privacy problems that people are seeing?
Didn't you watch any Bourne movies? If faces, in a crowd, can be compared with known faces [from social media], people [and their locations, activities, routines etc] can be identified. The data collection may start with the quasi-innocent feature recognition, yes this is a non-white/brown/black face.

If this is just 'raw' data collection, why are people in London arrested for hiding their faces from street cameras? We can opt out of social media. We can choose not to walk down streets full of cameras. I doubt this is innocent collection of raw faces; at least not for long.

    Oh, and this:
