  • Apple Fitness+ coming to 15 new countries, adding two new workouts

    Fitness+ for me is like ATV+.. a hockey stick of improvements, slow at first and then accelerating.

    I think Apple is potentially missing an opportunity with Fitness+ to cross sell AppleTV devices. We use AppleTV and a large screen TV as the primary workout device for Fitness+. When we first started to use it we immediately exercised together wearing apple watches but only one of us got the heart beat on screen.

    I think the missed opportunity is that the combo Fitness+ & AppleTV & Apple Watch is like the Nintendo Switch for fitness and very social. Yes they are addressing the social element using the sharing feature for remote people but they still have not addressed the at home group use case of multiple heart bars on screen with peer competition etc.

    Apple TV devices are priced competitively and could potentially be a nice bundle for home fitness for families where there are Apple Watches. This could enable Apple to keep a toehold in the living room and not lose it completely to Amazon that is now launching own brand smart TVs with Alexa built in. Apple Fitness+ is a powerful sticky Trojan horse and Amazon would likely have to buy Peleton to compete in the longer term.

  • New Apple Watch Series 7 with more durability, larger screen area revealed

    Mixed feelings about this upgrade. I have series 6 and was hoping for further e-health sensors. I was really hoping for glucose and stress meters but perhaps that is with Apple Watch 8 or maybe they are opting to go with medtech wristbands.

    Series 7 looks gorgeous however and the fast charge feature would be a boon for me to quickly top up the watch before going to bed. That definitely addresses a friction point for me.

    I do not know if I would benefit from a larger screen on the watch but perhaps this is to accommodate WatchOS 8 features and planned software upgrades in the future. It would not have been the top pick on my list. 

    Tougher screen and dust resistance is very nice but I have to say the Series 6 can take a beating and hijacking by small children already. 

    On device Siri will be epic with Apple Watch. For me on device Siri unleashes a lot more of its true potential. I am hoping a future iteration of the HomePod follows suit.

  • iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max launch with ProMotion & Super Retina XDR display

    Solid evolutionary upgrade. Doesn't shake the world but I don't expect a smart phone iteration to produce unicorn tears.

    Very curious about what people want from their phones and what they are expecting in a new one. My primary need is ever increasing quality of camera and increased battery life. They delivered on both. 

    Another ever improving feature that I need is damage resistance and water resistance as I am clumsy and the kids run off with my phone and sometimes it goes smash.

    Very nice bonus with capability to run offline Siri and some of the computational photography and cinematic features are hard to accomplish. 

    Frankly I think that iPhone's greatest Achilles heel at the moment is that the software side is lagging behind the hardware in truly leveraging all the new capabilities and pushing the art of the possible. Both in iOS and in the apps on the platform.. It is a bit like the console challenge where games truly leverage the platform to its full around the time the hardware becomes obsolete. With the iPhone the OODA loop of hardware refresh is too fast for the developer community to keep up.

  • Apple launches iPhone 13 with A15, smaller notch & more

    Solid evolutionary upgrades to echo viewpoint of another forum member. 

    Fantastic camera upgrades and my personal rationale for subscribing to iPhone is that every year I get a better camera for photos and videos of the kids.
    I can't wait for the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the Pro Max is my go-to iPhone.

    The increased battery life is also very very welcome along with ProMotion. All in all solid and the increased 5G coverage will make this sell like absolute hotcakes.

    As a shareholder I am over the moon about this cycle. Impressive execution by the team.

  • Compared: 2021 iPad Pro vs 2020 iPad Pro and 2018 iPad Pro

    I do not need this iPad Pro but oh boy do I want it. the iPad Air 4 is enough for my use case at the moment. 

    2021 iPad Pro with the M1 is a brilliant move in terms of product positioning as personally I always felt that the iPad Pro value prop was limping along a bit since the soc tended to be an interaction of the iPhone soc. Now it is more positioned with heavy workloads and helps Apple to build further efficiencies of scale for the M1 chip.

    I wonder if there would be a future option to run Rosetta 2 on the iPad and if having a magic keyboard and trackpad connected then to flip into a macOS emulation mode similar to how iOS apps can run under macOS. The M1 certainly provides the infrastructure to enable all sorts of convergence use cases in the future.
