  • Apple bans cryptocurrency mining on the iPhone and iPad

Hum. I don't think I fully understand this, but it seems like Apple is prohibiting certain uses of your CPU in a fundamental way. Very interesting.
That is because Apple probably saw the rise of apps doing un-disclosed activities in the apps, unbeknownst to users, namely - mining coins.

  • Apple inks Writers Guild of America contract, agrees to better writer benefits

This is a plus for writers. The WGA's MBA doesn't include a lot of important stuff, including many streaming platforms as well as the entire category of animation. That's right, if you write SHREK 2, you don't get residuals, even though animation is 25% of the box office. And streaming platforms are obviously the future, rather than traditional networks. Heck, even cable channels make you negotiate your own back end (if you get any) in many cases. So, bravo Apple, for doing a positive thing.

Although to be frank, Apple is going after such high profile talent, they probably had to sign the MBA in order to get the show runners to say yes. Still, they did it. Good for Apple. Come on, everybody else. You can't make content without writers. It's in your interest to make the job offering attractive to talent.
The real plus for the writers and any other profession would be if they could behave as independent people and not deal with Apple in favor of some other option, without resorting to a union....
Individual negotiation mostly is good for people that CAN negotiate with a position of force (say lead engineers with a good track record) or in professions with serious barriers to entries (like  most real professions).
It almost sounds as if you are saying that people who are good professionals, do have a much better leverage in negotiations, comparing to a mediocre "professional".
Wow...what a new idea... Obviously, we can't allow that. Lets string them together, so people and corporations have to pay for the shitty job just as much as they would for a good one, because now the amount is determined by the union. It is okay that the quality of the product, and consequently, customers will suffer. It is about equality, after all....(and about destroying the industries as well, but that will come later).

  • Some game developers hint at abandoning the Mac if Apple phases out OpenGL

Apple probably doesn't care about gaming on Macs. It's just another win for Windows PCs, as usual.
Then why are sales of Windows PCs falling while sales of Macs are growing?
Because when reality and fantasy collide, the former wins =)

If they made the game with metal maybe it wouldn't suck as much, and I would be buying the expansions and trowing money at them!
I am pretty sure, that is the actual reason for his:
["I'm not going to spend any time on Metal because Macs are a pretty small percentage of the market, and really probably not worth it even now," suggests Austin. "I just do it because I try to support fans if I can." ]
Most like it is a small, but sufficiently big portion of his revenue. The problem with windows is piracy, while Mac users would pay rather than using something with keygen or whatever...

You can protect/patent a notch, if you wish to do so. But, I think, Apple patents the whole visual design of a device, along with million of other things that device consists of.
