  • Apple TV+ ranks low in streaming industry surveys despite market boom

Everything about Apple TV+ gets scrutinized to the Nth degree. From the beginning Apple has said it wants to be different from other streaming services and build a library from scratch instead of repackaging old content. From the beginning Apple has been criticized for being different.

Reading how little content Apple TV+ has compared to Netflix equals reading how much garbage is on Netflix.

Right now I am enjoying Friday mornings on Apple TV+ watching new episodes of Dickinson and Servant. I am looking forward to the next season of All Mankind.

So Apple TV+ is ranked last again. Does it mean Apple is going broke financially? No. Does it mean Apple needs an acquisition to shovel old content? No. Does it mean Apple should drop Apple TV+? No.

When is the next survey scheduled?
It’s not being scrutinized to the Nth degree - because it’s not being watched!

  • MagSafe return & better displays in 2021 MacBook Pro backed in new report

So basically, they’re U-turning on several “innovations” from the 2016-2020 era. Goodbye keyboard from hell, useless Touchbar, and an inferior approach to charging.

Now all we need is a web cam that passes muster.

  • M1 MacBook Air review: nearly as transformative as the original

What is the word on compatibility with the Adobe Suite applications?  My son mostly uses those for his video and photo work. He has been limping along with a handed down Air.  Maybe it’s time to get a new machine. But I don’t want to go there if it’s going to introduce issues into his workflow...

In other words - not great. I think this review really struggles with the app compatibility issue, veering from “big players” to “niche apps.” But I do get the message - and will hold off. Genuinely surprised that they didn’t fix the webcam. Sounds like 2021
will be the year for something fresher, crisper and broadly compatible.

  • Apple opens repair program for iPhone 11 touchscreen issues

It’s almost like they waited for iPhone 12 to launch. Or something.

  • When it comes to big tech, US government official incompetence is embarrassing and horrify...

I liked the editorial, but it would benefit as a critique by including a clear (maybe bulleted) summary of the issues that were not effectively addressed by legislators. Right now, it’s an emphatic statement that an opportunity was missed, but I’m not clear on your top 5 (for example) substantive issues that you really wanted to see hashed out. Would also be interested in AI’s recommended reforms. It sounds like some interesting nuggets were contained in documents handed over to the committee — or was it just the odd thing like the Jobs correspondence on Kindle and the internal right to repair debate?

I know you’ve done a lot of reporting on this for a long time — so I’ll look for this kind of summary on your site. (I’m an AI quick skimmer as opposed to avid reader - my bad.) And yes, deeply depressing that an opportunity was missed to hold feet to the fire here. Please do keep this thread open!
