History will record iPhone X as a breakthrough in consumer tech. It has changed the world forever. The notch alone is now a universal benefit, even for Android.
OK, I'll bite.  Why is the notch alone a universal benefit outside of being a marketing tool?  If Apple would have limited the cutouts around the FaceID module use to displaying time, signal strength, battery strength, etc. with a black background there would be no "notch" so FaceID can't be the underlying benefit.  What universal utility is gained solely by expanding the app display area to two small ears at the top of the screen?
Because it shortens the height of the phone and the phone is already on the tall side.  It allows quick orientation of the phone, otherwise it would be like the vertically symmetrical AppleTV remote which drives me crazy when I try to operate it upside down.
I do that upside down thing too.

Love the X. When I try to use my wifes 6S or my iPad pro I have to think again about how to use a home button. Buttonless is by far a better user experience.

  • New Samsung ad takes shot at Apple over iPhone X notch, battery throttling controversy

Who has a Samsung phone old enough to worry about the battery getting run down? You cant keep it that long. Oh, and it would be about 10 releases behind on OS as well.

  • How Steve Jobs changed the face of retail with the Apple Store

All I know is that being able to walk into an apple store and discuss the ins and outs of a possible move from being a Windows family to a Mac family was what made me a fan of all things apple. Heck, helpful, knowledgable people who all seemed to have 7 or more year old computers that were running the most current operating system. That was enough for us to take the leap. Still enjoy going to the store even if I don't have a plan of buying a thing.

  • Video: Wishlist of features and fixes Apple could give the HomePod during WWDC 2018

Personally I find the HomePod very engaging. From just about any position in the room you get wonderful sound. Cant say that for expensive direct radiator speakers whose sound drops off once you are out of the so called "sweet spot". I specifically find that vocal tracks are much easier to discern than with other speakers we own. Using ours in the master bathroom provides excellent sound as we move around prepping for the day. The limited Siri is not really an issue to us. We use HomePod to get music, weather, and maybe a news story or two.
