I canceled before the 30 day trial period was up. I agree that it felt unfinished. Apple tried to launch to many services at one time.
They only launched one service, News+. The others were only announced. But I also cancelled my trial before the month was up, thinking I would have till the end of month to sample it, like almost every other subscription out there. But no. It ended the day I canceled which was pretty annoying.
I also cancelled before the 30 day period was up. I found it impossible to get directly to the mags I wanted to read. I get the managed selection of articles in the Free app, but at least they are news. I don’t get the value of a curated collection of articles from random mags. I’m not surprised the revenue is massively lower than forecast. Looks nice on the surface, but it is junk. Took the money I would have spent and found deals on both NYT and WaPo for less combined. Hate the NYT navigation also, but at least it’s actual news.

The project manager of News app is one of the most tone deaf group of people in Apple. They changed one of the perfect app on iOS to this atrocity. At first when new version of News launched we could not even hide the sidebar on iPad. I mean.. really?
the 1st version of News is so perfect. This is the case of somebody wants to make their marks that gone wrong.

(That said I’m still using News everyday because the content is great, not because the app is)

I’m currently traveling in China and Apple News is not available even using VPN connected to a US server. I’ve been traveling to China for 20 years and lived here for 6 and internet access just keeps getting worse and worse! In this case however it is actually Apple that is restricting access as I can still access the NYT and WP, which are blocked by the Chinese. Speaking with my Chinese friends here, many are not even aware of the Hong Kong demonstrations, or the issues they are demonstrating against. Nothing like keeping 1.3 Billion people in the dark. Trump has so many good friends like himself! You know the ones, the ones in leadership positions that suppress those “enemies of the people”!
Set your Region & Language in Settings/General to US and you’ll be able to access it anywhere in the world without a need of VPN.

Apple already have a solution for this right in iOS but incredibly they refuse to use it: bottom tabs navigation.

Put News+ in its own tab. Make a My Magazines tab front and center. Makes it so that for anyone who doesn’t subscribe to news this tab will be empty like Apple Music for non-subscribers and people will get curious and subscribe.

Coincidentally I just deleted 25 or so adware from my MBA by the help of malwarebytes.com. It has never run cooler or quieter than now. :)

To answer Lorin Schultz above, just don’t install suspect apps, apps that the process of installation looks suspicious. And don’t install Safari extension that you’re not sure of. If possible get the apps from Mac App Store as much as possible.
How on earth did you manage to get 25 or so malware on your Mac? – Or was it just something Malwarebytes reported, so it could sell you the Premium version?
Nah.. I have a couple of DVD I’m desperate to copy to ISO but the method via Disk Utility couldn’t get past the copy protection so.. umm.. I searched internet to find the app that do, and foolishly believed I found it until I was installing it and found the method looked fishy. Still I went ahead because I was desperate. Needless to say, after that every time I used Safari there always an ad or two popped up and my MBA running loud and hot like it was a jet fighter.
    Lesson learnt I guess.

  • Apple reportedly removes pro-democracy music from Apple Music in China

This really is a rather dramatic and head scratching conflict.  At virtually every media event, Cook almost breaks into tears as he dramatically professes Apple’s core values around the right to privacy.  He goes so far as to fight the US government to access someone’s personal device.

And yet, in China, a communist nation that oppresses individual rights, including privacy, Cook is more than willing to sway to the will of the oppressive government.

I like Apple products, but I don’t want to hear about Apple’s values.   If they’re not universally applied, they’re not values.  They’re sales tactics.
So you propose Apple to get out of China market? How does that benefit Chinese consumers?
Who cares if it benefits the Chinese consumer?  Why does that even matter?  If you have values and principles, you live them. You don’t bend them to make a buck.  Like @ttollerton said, values are absolute.  If you don’t apply them universally, they aren’t values.
Wait until you’re a CEO then preach (after investors kicking you out of course).

Extreme idealists has no place in the world. It’s more destructive than constructive.
