  • Apple freezes hiring outside of research and development

This makes more sense then previous reporting. I’ve seen Apple post lots of R&D jobs recently.

  • Apple confirms older operating system patches aren't as comprehensive as latest updates

Forced obsolescence? Both my 2015 iMac in 2017 and it doesn’t take Ventura so it’s basically done getting updates even though I only bought it 5 years ago. Apple doesn’t have a 27” iMac so there’s really nothing affordable to replace my old iMac.
Macs have always lasted about 8 years from original release. There are technical reasons for it. The forced obsolescence is a lot worse on Windows at the moment since it currently requires DirectX 12 and a TPM 2.0 chip. Which is probably around a 2018 cutoff for most PCs.

The most direct replacement is a Mac Mini with Studio Display. The panel is slightly improved from the 27” iMac, but very similar. The Studio Display would probably last through two upgrades saving a little money in the long term.

  • Tim Cook saw big money in App Store ads, shot down early resistance

When Apple moved from selling a perfectly reasonable opt-in ad service for developers to putting ads in to the operating system they lost their way. Apple is on a path to becoming Google and it isn't a good look. I might be able to forgive an ad supported tier, but ads should be reserved for optional replaceable apps in exchange for services. A lot of Apple users are on the platform because we don't want ads. They detract from the apps we use.

  • New 16-inch iPad rumored to arrive in late 2023

Parity with a Mac would only occur if it was able to run macOS.
There are rumors that the iPad Pros might get some ability to run macOS apps. I assume that would mean either running macOS apps (much like Macs can run iOS apps) in a separately sandboxed filesystem or running macOS in a VM. Stage Manager would probably make this feasible.

16" is a pretty good size for a Wacom replacement. The 13" is a little too small. Maybe it could use Thunderbolt to really bring display lag to a minimum.

There are some rumors of macOS or macOS apps coming to iPad, maybe this would be the one? I'm sure there would be a lot of creative users that would love to run Blender, ZBrush, or other creative tools right on a larger screen iPad. If Apple wanted a killer application for Pro iPads, this would be it. It would make a lot of sense for the iPad Pro line to get more parity with Mac and allow side-loading since many of these apps would never be available otherwise.

A 16" would be nice as a desktop replacement, although I don't really like my Smart Keyboard. It makes using the iPad as an iPad too awkward. Sometimes you want to mainly use the pencil or touch, but do a little typing and that is hard with the Smart Keyboard. I would prefer a standard aluminum Apple Keyboard with a little trackpad in front like the Smart Keyboard. I'd love that for my Mac too. A Smart Keyboard with bluetooth link so it keeps working when detached might be alright too.

Hopefully a larger iPad will have at least 2 USB-C ports.

If it could run Mac apps like Blender, I would definitely be buying it.
