  • Apple to spend millions on outreach, relocation for homeless living on its San Jose land

"Millions" for 35-70 people?  Go figure.

The people throwing money at the homeless problem must be the same running the San Francisco money-pit as well.
Although I don’t know the specifics here, this type of charity work usually involves investments. That means the money will generate money and go much further then just helping the 35 to 70 people. Usually this is through property investments that make a profit or at least break even.  More importantly it includes social work which is critical for long term homeless. From the little I know this looks well run.

If you want to talk about real waste, look to the tent camps payed for with tax dollars that cost $5000 per month per tent without services to get them out of homelessness.

Looking forward to this one. It’s great to see another game on the service that appeals to my generation.

The politicians are listening (being bought by) to loudmouth, greedy developers. I wish they would listen to users instead. If they did, we’d want a closed, secure, easy to purchase App Store.
They are also acting on behalf of Microsoft, who has been in the background trying to manipulate the situation the whole time, yet somehow a $2+ trillion market cap tech company not subject to any of this round of “regulation” or even minimal scrutiny.
I've not been following this closely (or thinking about all the players and their motives). What does Microsoft have to gain here?
Microsoft is upset that they have had apps rejected. They also see the App Store’s arbitrary rules as a risk to their platform as a service strategy.

  • Elon Musk asking to be Apple CEO allegedly led to profanity-laced tirade from Tim Cook

    sflocal said:
I don't even remotely imply to know anything about Tim Cook's candor between powerful tech titans, but I can't imagine Tim Cook telling anyone off like that.  I could easily imagine him laughing at Elon at the request, and politely saying "no" which is imho more direct than an emotional outburst.  It doesn't seem to be his style.  I could easily be wrong.

That being said, as much as I admire Musk's leadership abilities, I don't think he would ever be a good fit for Apple as CEO.  Maybe some kind of "Chief Visionary Officer" maybe, but that's it.
I wouldn’t normally see it, but if this is real it verges on ridiculous. I could see an uncharacteristic FU in this case. Right that Musk wouldn’t be a great CEO for Apple. I think he is a better fit where there is a higher level of hardware vertical integration then you would find at Apple. Apple is all about software and silicon integration with a tight supply chain. I don’t see Musk being good at that. SpaceX and Tesla is perfect for him.

  • 90% of respondents in Apple employee-made survey want remote work option

90% of 1% of Apple employees strongly agree with the options they’re already getting?

To be fair, it was probably mostly certain types of Apple employees. Not everyone at Apple uses Slack. 1,749 of employees that develop products is not a small number.
