Apple explains why Microsoft xCloud won't be coming to the iPhone
Beats said:InspiredCode said:This is frustrating because it feels very arbitrary. Apple likes to say everyone needs to follow the same rules, but is it really that bad to make an exception when a large number of users want it to happen. Making unpopular decisions based on strictly following rules that Apple themselves wrote isn't a great way to win hearts and minds.
Because if they allow one company to break the rules it opens the gates for everyone else.
I would love game publishers to see iOS as a real platform for gaming. I would love to see games with more depth then candy crush. iOS should be compelling for gaming with powerful GPUs that can match an Xbox in top models. Unfortunately Apple does nothing but work against attracting gamers to the platform. -
Microsoft ends iOS xCloud testing, launching as Android exclusive
I like Apple Arcade, but this service doesn’t compete in the same space. This still feels a little like Apple Books vs Amazon all over. Apple doesn’t want to allow competing game services in, but Apple will also never do what is necessary to actually be competitive with other services that want to be on the platform. The consumer ends up having to buy redundant hardware from other companies or jump through other hoops because of App Store restrictions.Apple wants to run the App Store like a gaming platform. The problem is gaming platforms are loss leaders for their stores. iPhones and iPads are profitable general purpose devices. I think that distinction matters. If other platforms didn’t suck so much, this tight control over what is allowed on iOS would cause me to switch to another companies ecosystem. I really want to see the platforms open to anything like macOS.
The more I’ve thought about this, the more I’d like to see an official side-load option via a website download. Allow corporate devices to disable the side-load. Some app extensions could be for the App Store only for security reasons. Apps would be responsible for scheduling their updates via an externally hosted ipa file. If Apple provides an alternative way to distribute apps then I think it is perfectly fine to exclude competitors from their store. -
Microsoft launching Project xCloud game streaming service in September
I hope this goes through review and doesn’t require something crazy like 100 game specific streaming apps. I’ve hoped that Apple would become friendlier to game streaming services and retro game collections in an app. The one game per app restriction is awful. Imagine if you had to put all of your Netflix movies and TV shows individually on your Home Screen. -
Facebook SDK bug again causing iOS apps such as Spotify to crash [u]
Unfortunately they just fixed it server side instead of going to the root problem in the iOS SDK that is crashing the apps...
FaceBook needs to update their ancient iOS SDK to follow modern practices. If a field in the JSON response is missing it will crash the program. Almost every other major service from large tech companies has either moved to OpenAPI or at least modernized their SDK to something that is more difficult for their developers to mess up. At a minimum they at least need to go through all their code and check for null in all json responses and handle them properly instead of blindly calling methods on a null pointer. -
App Store policy and developer fee drama won't change Apple's ways at all
This is my own anecdotal experience. I know a lot of people that switched to Android over–at least in part–circumstances created by App Store gatekeeping. This has nothing to do with the 30% cut, but some of the issues are created in Apple’s attempts to make sure they always get that cut. If there is something you can’t do on iOS, but you can do on Android you are going to switch to Android. I would have myself if not for other parts of the Apple ecosystem keeping me here. These people no longer show up in Apple customer satisfaction because they are no longer Apple users. I‘m not going to get in to the specifics, but I certainly sense that frustration when I subscribe to a streaming service, want a new book to listen to in Audible, or want to stream my console games to my iPad.
