  • Apple will hold WWDC 2021 online June 7 through June 11

I miss in-person WWDC, but this is how it needs to be moving forward. You can’t bring 22 million people to a non-virtual event.

  • Apple AR headset debuts in mid-2022 with lightweight Fresnel lens design, Kuo says

It would have been helpful if there was a note on what exactly Fresnel Lens are.

I checked Wiki about it and, while there is probably no small way to explain what it is, a paragraph about it would have been helpful.
They work the same as normal lenses, they are just made thinner by putting microscopic concentric grooves in the surface to change the angle of light as it passes through. Think of it as the lens equivalent of lossy jpeg compression. You basically make the lens smaller by losing information you’ll never notice anyway. They need to do this or it would be like wearing three pairs of glasses each over the next.

Not all lenses are equal. Hopefully they put in better lenses then the Oculus Quest uses. The Quest refracts light pretty badly (i.e. lossy) in dark scenes.

  • Intel takes aim at Apple, instead shoots itself in the dongle

    entropys said:
Not at all sure what it has to do with the CPU, but there is kinda a point about the dongle debacle.
You know, other than the fact that there are all USB-C Windows laptops, and Intel was instrumental in the development of the physicality and protocol of the connector.

Besides that, still no. Computer users have been adapting since day one, and will continue to do so forever.
All usb-c makes sense for ultra mobile form factors since it is the “do anything” port. USB-C represents the end of dongles since everything new is USB-C. The Mac Mini, iMac, and Mac Pro have traditional ports. I’ve pretty much converted all my USB-A ports to low wattage USB-C ports with compact adaptors at this point anyway. I’ve put USB-C cables on all my drives, monitors, etc. I’d rather just have USB-C everywhere.

  • Apple's original HomePod was overpriced, and that doesn't bode well for AirPods Max

The price was only a problem because it couldn’t replace a home stereo in major listening spaces. At this quality of system, it had to be the only speaker in the room. If Apple found a way to offer Bluetooth, TV (other then Apple TV), and game system support it would have been very successful. Even if they had to somewhat compromise the computational audio features in these situations to reduce latency. I absolutely love my Homepods, but I only have them in the bedroom and dining room where they don’t need to replace another system.

The AirPods Max will integrate with everything, so they might not suffer the same fate. However a lower end Beats-like $250 model would certainly be more popular.

  • North Dakota rejects anti-Apple App Store bill drafted by Epic Games lobbyist

Tim Sweeney said on Twitter that they had nothing to do with this. It was an independent action by the coalition for app fairness.
