  • Qualcomm gains $4.5B to $4.7B from Apple settlement

Seems about right.  The analysta claimed between $5-$6 billion.  QC owed Apple a billion, so a payment of ~$4.5 billion seems on par with the analyst's estimate.  Good thing it's over.  Now they can get back to the business of doing business.

  • Apple opposes logo for new German bike path, claiming too many similarities

This just in: The Rhine-Voreifel Tourism Board hires the lawyers from Swatch Group
/Apple backs away slowly... then runs.
    :D  :D

Seriously though, the only similarity in the logos is the leaf.  The actual apple portion looks nothing alike.  The tourism board's apple looks more like a cherry than an apple.  It even has a stem so people can twist it with their tongue. B)

  • Small-town Wisconsin suffering under weight of Foxconn deal, with CEO headed to White Hous...

    DAalseth said:
This was BS when proposed. It was a scam when Trump and the previous Governor staged their photo op. Now the state and local governments are out massive amounts while Foxconn got what it came for. A few million dollars worth of good press. Wisconsin may gain a few hundred, maybe a thousand jobs, but not the giant tech hub promised. It just isn't, and was never going to, happen. You can tell by the way Foxconn's story keeps changing; a device manufacturing plant, an LCD plant, a research centre, it's whatever will sell at this or that particular press conference. They can say anything. It doesn't matter it isn't going to happen anyway. It was a scam from day one.
I'd bet around 2020 this deal is going to suddenly ramp up and start to start almost doing something that resembles doing something that looks like progress if progress consisted of saying it's progress that's coming.  After the election cycle, the deal is going to return to it's dormant phase.  The people of Wisconsin will still be left holding a bag full of empty promises.

  • Apple's Siri ties with Google Assistant for most-used voice assistant

    AppleZulu said:
Interesting. This would indeed suggest that despite all the whingeing about Siri being less capable than the other digital assistants, Siri is much more actively used by owners of Apple products than are the digital assistants on other brands.

For Siri and Google Assistant to be tied for usage, a lot of people are talking to Siri on their Apple devices, and a lot of people with Android devices aren’t talking to Google. That pretty much has to mean that, despite the claims that Google Assistant is technically superior or more capable, a lot more of the people who have access to it don’t find it useful enough to bother. So why would that be? Is Google’s AI not actually that great in this context? Do people have security concerns and disable it?
You've drawn a conclusion that can't be supported by the information in the article.  The survey says both Siri and GA have a 36% usage rate.  If both are at 36%, aren't more people using GA than Siri?  36% of Apple device users = a number people.  If there are more Android users to start with, then 36% of their users = a larger number people.  Right?

Also, you can't equate usage with the capability of the assistant.  There's no corollary that ties the two together.  That's akin to saying Windows is better than MacOS because more people use it.

Basically all you can discern from the survey is digital assistants are in use and the each have strengths in different areas.

  • Apple hired away Intel's 5G modem lead just prior to Qualcomm settlement

In my twisted imagination, a situation like this occured:

Tim Cook: "Give it to use straight. Can Intel deliver the 5G modem?"

    Thyagarajan:
    /stares around meeting room {pauses a beat}
    /pantomime's hanging one's self

Tim Cook: {sighs heavily} "Can somebody get f@#$%&! Qualcomm on the line."

But seriously this is interesting. I'd guess his opinion of Intel's 5G efforts had a strong influence on Apple's decision to settle with Qualcomm. As a key figure in Intel's development, he would be able to give an unvarnished assessment of Intel's chances of success with delivering a 5G mobile modem and delivering it on time.
