  • Apple hires away Amazon exec to head up corporate digital security, report says

This is the next logical step for Apple in light of all the FBI news.

Based on Apple's history when facing anything that in any way threatens their secrecy, such as the FBI's recent full-court press to literally wreck their iOS integrity, I believe this is a logical response.

In other words, Tim Cook is doing what he has in the past - 'doubling down on security'.

In addition, hiring George Stathakopoulos makes perfect sense in light of recent reports that Apple is extending their encryption to their iCloud service - literally making it end-to-end, making it literally impossible for them to "help" the FBI going forward to access that data as they have in the past - without the owner's password.

FBI director James Comey's aggressive authoritarian attacks against Apple and other tech companies since taking the job in 2013 has done incalculable damage to the FBI's reputation. Making it almost impossible for any CEO to trust, much less want to "cooperate" with the FBI going forward. This is bad for the FBI and bad for the country. Frankly, I think Comey should resign.

  • Apple, US prosecutors to present and cross-examine witnesses at iPhone encryption hearing

I hope not. I continue to be embarrassed by the actions of the US Government.
The Obama administration continues to show its incompetence. And I voted for him as I believed he would champion individual rights and reverse the draconian policies enacted by the even greater incompetence of the previous Bush administration.

Obama did not limit the NSA, he expanded their powers while attempting to incarcerate true defenders of the constitution like Eric Snowden.

To make matters worse, there's no one in the upcoming election who will attempt to reign in the NSA, CIA, FBI, etc. Since both the Democratic elites and Republican elites have an unusually excessive degree of fear over the possibility of a Trump presidency, he will get my vote. If the country goes down, Trump will ensure that all of the politicians and wealthy elites go down too.

Mutually assured destruction. Like in the Cold War. Maybe only then will a real discussion take place and the country move forward rationally.

The current circus surrounding the iPhone encryption promoted by Obama has hardened me against the Democratic Party. I won't be voting for Hillary who will just continue the attempt to force Apple to perform the great iPhone hack. Trump probably will too.  But he will use that hack against the congressional members of both parties. He won't hesitate. And it will force congress to pass a law which allows Apple to keep its software secure. And by a large enough margin to ensure that it's veto proof. It might even usher in bipartisanship for the first time in many years.

Trump gets my vote. Unless Obama does the right thing and calls off the dogs at the FBI.
It's impressive to see a nihilist feed off of his own ignorance and hate.

Not that this apparently matters to you, but this article and the comments about it are about an up-coming court hearing between Apple, the FBI and DoJ next week. Not the next election 8 months away.

Please don't go away mad. Just go away.

  • FBI issues safety warning to auto makers on vehicle software security

The FBI wants to stop end-to end un-breakable encryption. But the FBI issues "warnings" to a problem that requires end-to-end unbreakable encryption to solve. Either the FBI are a bunch of technologically challenged bureaucrats, or two-faced liars.

  • FBI issues safety warning to auto makers on vehicle software security

In George Orwell's 1984 he refers to this type of two-faced communication by the FBI as "Doublespeak". You know, saying one thing but essentially meaning the opposite. This latest 'warning' regarding car security is but the latest example. The FBI is defining a problem while working to take away the very tools (encryption) that would allow a solution.

Are the FBI simply hypocrites, technologically incompetent, or maybe the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing?

It appears FBI director James Comey has turned the FBI into a politically agenda driven organization, instead of a law enforcement investigator. I believe he is an authoritarian zealot masquerading as a law enforcement bureaucrat. When Comey states that 'this is the hardest thing he's ever done', I would take that literally – it is indeed very hard to get your way in Washington and convince Congress to make new law. Mr. Comey's entire agenda is to make his job (and law enforcement) easier. When he uses 'double-speak' and says things like "personal privacy and liberty are very important to me", what he really means is it is very important to him because the FBI wants unfettered access around it. George Orwell is turning over in his grave.

  • Tim Cook says he's 'offended' by government smears in latest Time cover story

"The government should always be the one defending civil liberties. And there's a role reversal here," – Tim Cook

If law enforcement could protect the public from identity theft and getting data stolen – personal and public data– then end-to-end encryption would not be necessary. But they can't. So it is.

Bottom-line: Apple is helping us protect our highly personal private data ourselves, because the gov't cannot do it for us.
